We have transformed shelter operations, saving thousands of lives each year. We care for approximately 12,000 animals annually, with spay/neuter as our primary surgical focus.
Our brand-new facility features a state-of-the-art surgery suite, and our medical team is currently composed of 5 veterinarians—working in both medicine and surgery –and we are looking for our 6th.

*Job Relationship: *Directly reports to the Chief Medical Officer. Works closely with all departments and volunteers.
*Position Summary: *As a Surgery Veterinarian, you will work with a team of Veterinarians to provide quality high volume spay and neuter surgery and other medically necessary procedures, care for emergency cases, and administer exams and medications as necessary. You’ll work in coordination with the Chief Medical Officer, 4 other Veterinarians, Director of Veterinary Services, Surgery Manager, Surgery Technicians and Assistants and Franky Fund Manager to uphold the highest standards of care and ensure humane treatment for all animals.
*Key Responsibilities:*
* Performs high volume sterilization surgeries and medically necessary procedures.
* Responsible for ensuring shelter animals are altered immediately upon becoming eligible for surgery and meeting surgery grant requirements to maximize life saving.
* Ensures surgery staff are complying with established clinic protocols and procedures.
* Regularly participates in continuing education as it relates to high volume spay/neuter protocols and other surgical procedures.
* Establishes positive working relationships and coordinates schedules with contract veterinarians for assistance with surgery to meet the shelter's needs.
* Administers medical and surgical treatment as needed and creates treatment plans for veterinary technicians to administer.
* Responsible for ensuring the humane treatment of animals
*Qualifications:*
* Licensed DVM or VMD in the State of Maryland.
* DEA license (can be obtained after being hired)
* Maryland CDS Registration (can be obtained after being hired)
* Strong surgical skills with high quality, high volume surgical experience preferred.
* Experience in shelter medicine is highly desirable.
* Minimum one year of surgery experience in a veterinary hospital, clinic, or shelter is desirable.
* Ability to handle dogs, cats and other species of various temperaments and conditions.
* Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with a variety of people.
* Excellent communication and able to contribute to a positive working environment.
* Clear and accurate communication and data entry skills.
* Committed to maintaining the BARCS high standard of animal care and mission.
*Working Conditions: *Work is performed in an active animal shelter with exposure to various conditions including noise, dust, and animal interaction. Physical exertion is required, such as standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting animals and supplies. Exposure to various animals, cleaning agents, and potential hazards is expected, along with the rewarding experience of caring for animals in need.
*Schedule:*
* Day shifts only. Three 10-hour shifts and one 8-hour shift on a weekend day
* No on-call duties, ensuring a balanced lifestyle.
*Education: *Doctorate (Required)
*Experience:*
* Veterinary Surgical Experience: 1 year (Preferred)
