Job Description Are you ready to join a team of talented and innovative engineers within our UK Transmission & Distribution business and grow your career? The Transmission & Distribution department delivers project management, design and owners engineer roles for electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltages across the UK and globally. The focus of the team is large‑scale grid infrastructure, grid connections and private networks.
Due to continued growth across a breadth of projects and clients, we are looking for an ambitious Senior Electrical Substation Design Engineer to join the team. This is a fantastic time to join us and apply your skills across a multi‑disciplinary, innovative team and work within a varied portfolio of groundbreaking projects. The work will be varied and there will be a lot of opportunity to learn in this role. A key project you will be working on is the UK National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership; being part of a £9bn Enterprise partnership that will connect clean energy to homes and businesses across England and Wales.
Responsibilities
Design primary plant layouts and schematics for HV substations
Produce equipment specifications for HV plant and associated equipment
Provide engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
Prepare technical specifications and documentation
Undertake an Owners’ Engineer role on HV substation/cable and OHL projects
Provide HV design input to renewable energy projects (e.g., battery storage, solar, hydro and wind generation)
Coordinate across multi‑disciplinary engineering environments and project managers, and conduct site visits/inspections to ensure design integrity

Qualifications
A degree in Electrical Engineering
Experience working on high‑voltage design projects
Experience working with major utilities or developers
Experience as a designer or project engineer
Experience developing specifications or detailed designs for substation control systems, transformers, GIS and AIS switchgear
The ability to work flexibly across multiple projects
Experience in technical report writing
Fluency in English
Full driving licence and access to a personal vehicle (site visits may be required)
Experience of working on multi‑disciplinary engineering projects (ideal)
Chartered accreditation or working toward status (ideal)
Consultancy experience (ideal)
Experience reviewing detailed designs and witnessing construction site activities (ideal)
