L3Harris is seeking a Specialist, Tool Design Engineer to join our team at our growing AMF facility in Huntsville, AL. Tool engineers are responsible to define manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices are all required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. The role of a Tool Engineer is a mixture of design, structural analysis, project management, and hands-on manufacturing. In this role, the selected individual will be responsible for: Working with cross-functional teams to define tool requirements. Designing using PTC Creo and Windchill in accordance with principles of Design for Manufacturability. Conducting design reviews with cross-functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs. Overseeing procurement/fabrication of tooling. Working with manufacturing engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling. Performing liaison support for tool maintenance by identification of tool problems, design of repairs, and implementation of modifications. Using finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools in order to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities. Applying GD&T and complex system tolerance analysis. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to obtain a US security clearance. Travel: 5%. Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience; or a Graduate Degree, and a minimum of 2 years prior mechanical engineering design experience; or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience. 2 years of prior experience specifically in design of tooling, ground support equipment, or special test equipment. Preferred Additional Skills: Experience with Siemens NX is preferred. Experience with ANSYS is preferred. Fabrication experience is preferred. Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred. Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred. Experience working in the defense industry is desired.
