In the UK, we deliver concept through to detail design for a wide range of clients including established asset owners and new market entrants (interconnectors, private wire schemes, etc). Recently, Arup formed a joint venture with Aecom to serve as the design and consenting service partner for the UK National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership. Over 8–12 years, Arup will help deliver key aspects of the transmission grid transformation, ensuring a resilient, low-carbon energy network for the future. This major grid modernisation programme will deliver five times more electricity infrastructure than the past three decades. Part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework, these projects will enhance the country’s energy backbone, supporting renewable developments such as wind farms in the North Sea and East Anglia. By expanding and improving the grid, the programme aims to accelerate the transition to net zero, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and lower energy costs. This collaboration aims to connect clean energy to homes and businesses across England and Wales by 2030 and beyond. The Opportunity We are seeking
Senior Engineering OHL candidates
with proven experience in transmission and distribution, including routing, tower design, and CAD skills. The successful candidates will have a background in EHV OHL design (33kV - 525kV), supporting construction, procurement, and consultancy projects. We will support your professional growth in the sector. The role involves: preparation and checking of feasibility studies, design reports, technical documents; design and review of construction drawings; production of design concepts, specifications, and technical documents; managing teams of engineers and external suppliers; delivering work on time, within budget, and to specifications. We are interested in overhead transmission line designers with skills in: substation equipment design, line termination gantry structures, cable sealing ends, powerline design with PLS-CADD, sag and tension calculations, catenary system design, line profiling, gantry analysis, tower setting levels, environmental loads, insulator set design, overhead line wire clearance, route planning, material quantification, short circuit studies, and structural foundation design (piled, pad, rock-anchor). We seek candidates with: Relevant qualification in the discipline Professional qualification (or within 12 months) Business strategy leadership skills Previous consultancy experience Strong programme/project delivery skills BESC and Person Training – National Grid preferred Vacancies are open to multiple UK office locations based on your preference.
