About The Role Balfour Beatty is looking for a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join its Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team across the UK.
The main function of the role is the delivery of primary engineering design for electrical substation projects up to 400 kV with support from Design Engineers.
The role also involves supporting the team with planning and procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery.
Key Accountabilities
Deliver design to the Customer’s specification, ensuring compliance with relevant national and international standards and legislation.
Check and approve HV plant design deliverables, e.g. single‑line diagram, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design and calculations.
Work with due regard to health and safety procedures and the Company’s obligations under current CDM regulations. Any perceived risks and mitigation measures should be advised to the Engineering Manager.
Ensure all required models and drawings are adequately reviewed and approved, including those from suppliers and subcontractors, incorporating best practice BIM as established in the Engineering team.
General Responsibilities
Ensure duties are carried out in accordance with Standard Company quality, health & safety, environmental procedures and business process manuals.
Deliver engineering design on programme, quality and budget, and lead safety and sustainability by design into engineering delivery.
Act as authorised approver of designs (and associated settings) on contracts, in accordance with published design/check/approve authorisation levels.
Commercial/Contract Responsibilities Report variations to the Design Manager/Engineering Manager, indicate implications and proceed only after verbal or written approval from the Engineering Manager.
Design Responsibilities
Identify all relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with national and international standards and the contract specification.
Carve out design work with due regard to health, safety & environmental procedures, producing designer risk assessments where required.
AIS and GIS substation design up to 400 kV.
Education Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. A graduation engineering degree is desirable.
Member of IET (MIET).
Working towards chartership (CEng).
Experience
Liaising with customers and suppliers.
Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated components.
Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs.
Microsoft Office packages.
AutoCAD 2D / Revit experience.
Working on BIM360.
Experience as HV substation / primary plant design engineer.
Basic understanding of P&C aspects preferable.
TP141 HV substation qualification is an advantage.
