Excellent Time-Off Benefits OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB: Provides health care and treatment to all inmates with a mental or physical injury or illness and/or developmental disability or the care of individuals having difficulty meeting their daily living activities at the County Correctional Facility. Essential Functions of the Job:
Participates in practical nursing and other inmate care duties for individuals who have a mental or physical injury or illness and/or developmental disability in order to assure that the emotional and physical needs of inmates are met. Prepares and administers medications ordered by the physician under the direction of a Physician such as oral medications, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in order to carry out the individual treatment programs. Performs venipuncture and administers and withdraws intravenous fluids in accordance with functions as defined in state law and established agency/institution policies and procedures. Administers immunizing agents and performs skin testing, such as tine and PPD, and assesses and records results in accordance with functions as defined in state law and established agency/institution policies and procedures.
Prepares and administers treatments ordered by the physician such as enemas, special dressings, soaks and treatments involving the application of ointments and lotions, hot water bottles and ice packs in order to meet the physical needs.
Transcribes and puts physicians' orders into effect in accordance with policy and procedure to assure that mediations and/or treatments are administered as ordered. Provides inhalation and respiratory treatments, as prescribed in accordance with scope and extent of authorized functions and agency/institution policies and procedures. Records the administration of medications and/or treatments and notes and records indicative signs and symptoms of the inmates' physical and mental condition in order to maintain accurate records. Observes inmates for behavioral changes, responses to medication, side effects of mediation, objective and subjective signs of physical illness or injury and reports findings to supervisor.
Prepares and maintains progress notes and summary reports on the inmate in order to summarize the care given and to insure complete and accurate records. Gathers data, completes checklist and schedules. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team by providing input for the assessment of the nursing needs of each inmate. Participates in quality assurance/improvement and risk management activities. Promotes and maintains health through teaching, guidance and counseling on injections, medications, personal hygiene and health care to inmates in accordance with scope and extent of authorized functions and practice under the direction of the Physician. Schedules appointment for inmates such as chest x-rays, laboratory studies and EKGs. Prepares inmates for tests and x-rays, physical therapy, etc. Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure for the purpose of monitoring the day-to-day health care of the inmate. Obtains sputum, urine, blood, and other specimens as ordered; and labels and records appropriate information and sends for laboratory examination. Guides and encourages inmates to participate in habilitation and rehabilitation programs. Reports to work on a regular basis and performs duties for the entire work shift. Must be available to work overtime as required by management. Supplemental Tasks: 1. Maintains job skills by attendance at mandatory in-service, out-service meetings. 2. Adheres to all infection control procedures. 3. Inventories supplies and equipment and maintains adequate stock of all treatment areas. 4. Assists in preparing medical incident reports on injuries or sudden illnesses of inmates.
5. Sterilizes supplies and instruments. 6. Responds to emergencies and administer first aid and CPR when appropriate medical conditions are present. 7. Must negotiate housing units to provide nursing assistance when called to the site. 8. Interacts with inmate clients to resolve conflicts related to their health care and to supervise them as they work in the medical department. 9. Performs job-related work as required. Supervision received: Receives instruction and supervision from the Physician, Warden, Deputy Warden, and/or Shift Commander. The Physician reviews the work in progress, through reports and by ward or living area inspections and observations. Supervision given: None. Working conditions: 1. Works indoors in adequate work space, temperatures, ventilation and lighting. 2. Works with average indoor exposure to noise, stress and disruptions. 3. Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt. 4. Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens or communicable diseases. 5. Works in conditions of potential outbursts or disruptive behavior of inmates. Physical/mental conditions: 1. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions. 2. Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday, with intermittent periods of standing, walking, bending, twisting and reaching necessary to carry out job duties. 3. Medium work with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with minimum weight of ten pounds. 4. Communicate both written and orally effectively. 5. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability. 6. Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position. 7. Must be able to pay close attention to details, coordinate efficiently and concentrate on work. 8. Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak; may meet to perform restraint techniques. 9. Lift and/or support to reposition, transfer, and ambulate inmates. 10. Push and pull to move inmates in wheel chairs and meal/medication carts. 11. Manual dexterity of upper extremities to perform direct patient care. 12. Corrected vision to be able to visually assess inmates and maintain personal safety. 13. Must hear sufficiently to communicate and/or telephone, and use of stethoscope. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/training: High school diploma or equivalent, plus possession of a current Pennsylvania license as a Licensed Practice Nurse issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing; or possession of a non-renewable temporary practice permit issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Employees possessing non-renewable temporary practice permits must obtain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse within the one (1) year period as defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Work experience: 1-2 years working experience as a Licensed Practice Nurse preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Pre-Employment physical exam and drug & alcohol screen. Criminal history clearance. Valid PA driver's license. Knowledge, skills and abilities required: 1. Knowledge of practical nursing theory and practice, and of the materials used and practical nursing procedures involved in ward and living areas. 2. Knowledge of physical illnesses, injuries and/or developmental disabilities, including symptomatology, appropriate medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols. 3. Knowledge of medications prescribed, including calibration of dosage, expected effects, drug interactions, side effects and expected response to ensure that the inmate receives safe and administration of medication.
4. Ability to prepare ward, living area and inmate care and treatment reports and to maintain appropriate records. 5. Ability to maintain a therapeutic attitude toward individuals with a mental or physical injury or illness and/or developmental disability and to maintain effective working relationships with professional and non-professional staff and the general public. 6. Ability to administer prescribed prescriptions and treatment and to observe, record and report symptoms, vital signs and response to health interventions provided. 7. Ability to implement nursing care and treatment plans for each inmate.
8. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions. 9. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 10. Ability to position, lift and transfer non-ambulatory individuals/patients/residents/inmates as needed. 11. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of the job. 12. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills. 13. Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public. 14. Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to County information and records. 15. Must possess the technical knowledge of operating personal computers and other office equipment with accuracy and reasonable speed. 16. Must possess ability to compose replies to routine correspondence. 17. Must possess basic math skills and ability to accurately prepare required reports and mathematical record keeping. 18. Must possess ability to meet and interact effectively with co-workers and general public and to respond accurately to routine questions/inquiries regarding department operations and procedures. 19. Must possess a high degree of alertness and the ability to detect problems or potential problems. 20. Must be able to complete required reports and maintain records accurately. 21.
