Overview At the SEI AI Division we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence (AI) and the engineering questions that support practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. As a Senior Machine Learning Research Scientist you will focus on the vulnerabilities of AI and ML algorithms and on securing them against attacks. Responsibilities Identify and investigate emerging AI and AI‑adjacent technologies. Perform and publish original research on AI/ML algorithm vulnerabilities and defenses. Adapt existing research to solve real‑world problems. Lead novel research projects and prototype operational capabilities for government customers. Plan, develop, and carry out an overall research strategy and influence the national research agenda. Collaborate with software developers, researchers, designers, technical leads, and stakeholders. Mentor junior team members and contribute to the overall technical capabilities of the Division. Knowledge & Experience Comprehensive knowledge of machine learning; experience in adversarial machine learning preferred. A track record of conducting research and applying scientific methods to solve difficult problems. Experience leading research projects in novel areas with limited prior work. Ability to plan and deliver an overall research strategy. Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical ideas in lay terms. Proficiency in writing funding proposals or pitching new research projects. Experience publishing scholarly or technical work. Collaboration skills for working with colleagues and sponsors. Requirements Bachelor’s degree (CS, statistics, machine learning, electrical engineering or related field) with ten (10) years of experience; OR Master’s degree with eight (8) years; OR PhD with five (5) years. Willingness to work onsite at an SEI facility five days per week. Must be able to obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance. Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to locations such as the SEI offices in Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., sponsor sites, and conferences.
