This role involves collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other surgical staff to ensure patient safety and efficient surgical procedures. General Summary The Surgical Technologist is a skilled professional who assists before, during, and after surgery using sterile techniques and specialized equipment. This position focuses on supporting C-section deliveries and nursery care within the operating room environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with surgical procedures, particularly C-sections, in the Labor & Delivery operating room. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and demonstrate manual dexterity. Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring sterile conditions and proper setup for deliveries and surgeries. Coordinate inventory management with sterile processing departments. Apply aseptic and sterile techniques, including surgical scrub procedures. Perform unit-related tasks such as answering phones, patient checks, nursing aide duties, and electronic charting. Clean and stock delivery suites, nursery equipment, and related areas. Assist patients with activities of daily living including meals, grooming, skin care, and toileting. Provide postpartum care such as applying K-Pads, ice packs, and binders. Collect specimens, take vital signs, and document intake and output. Communicate patient condition changes to appropriate personnel promptly.
Education Graduation from an accredited Nursing, Practical Nurse, or Surgical Technologist program is required. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) candidates with documented cross-training as a scrub tech are also considered. Experience Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Surgical Assistants should have at least three years of scrub experience. Certification and Licenses Completion of surgical scrub training and orientation in both OR and OB settings is required. American Heart Association BLS certification must be obtained prior to completing orientation. Preference is given to candidates with Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credentials. Mental and Physical Requirements This role demands significant mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Working Conditions Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, as well as occasional encounters with hostile individuals, is expected. Minimal physical discomfort is typical.
