Beach Manager

POSITION TITLE: Recreation Specialist – Beach Manager (Temporary)
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
REPORTS TO: Recreation Manager
EXEMPT STATUS: FLSA Non-Exempt position; eligible for overtime compensation
SALARY RANGE: $ $34.65 DOE

Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, this position is responsible for the management of beach operations at Lake Wilderness Park. The Swim Beach at Lake Wilderness is open daily 12pm- 7pm, unless otherwise posted, from late June to late August. The Beach Manager oversees management of all lifeguards, boat rentals, and public safety at the beach.

The Beach Manager is a seasonal position, eligible to work up to 5 months, and may work an irregular schedule that includes some evenings and weekends as dictated by City programs and special events. This position is FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime compensation

  • Responsible for the planning, implementation, and coordination of open water beach operations while maintaining a safe, fun, and enriching environment for all participants and staff.
  • Acts in a leadership role over an assigned program (site supervisor). Supervises volunteers, staff, and program participants to meet the needs of the activity, event, or program. Takes an active role in mentoring and developing all staff and volunteers to meet high standards for program excellence.
  • Leads the supervision of Lifeguards and Senior Lifeguards, including application reviews, interviews, hiring paperwork, training, daily supervision, approval of timecards, maintenance of work schedules, and corrective action in collaboration with the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Works with the Recreation Manager on the development and coordination of beach operations that promote inclusion, equity, and safety for all participants.
  • Manages all aspects of the boat rental operations, including putting the public on the boats/boards and explaining the rental rules and safety responsibilities
  • Communicates with participants, families, caregivers, and community agencies to determine participants' health/medical, social, physical, and intellectual needs and abilities.
  • Under the direction of the supervisor, selects, purchases, and maintains equipment and supplies for the program, working within the assigned budget.
  • Provides onsite leadership and instruction to program participants in specific areas.
  • Leads emergency response, including but not limited to directing staff, communicating with emergency services, and providing aid in a responsible manner.
  • Responds to customer questions and provides information to staff and participants regarding program registration, scheduling, and fees.
  • Assists in promoting and marketing recreation activities in the community with promotional and advertising materials such as flyers, brochures, and other media resources.
  • Performs a variety of administrative tasks in support of recreation programs. Completes and maintains proper forms, reports, and information for the program.
  • Ensures safe and clean facility for participants, including making recommendations for improvement and performing light custodial duties.
  • Develops and leads staff trainings and updates the beach operation manual, ensuring national standards are met or exceeded.
  • Performs lifeguarding duties as needed
  • Performs routine inspections of the swim area, beach house, safety equipment, and supplies.
  • Assists with other programs and events as requested. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of municipal recreation, specializing in aquatic operations and programs.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, participants, volunteers, parents, and the public.
  • Proficient in the use of automated word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, related graphics, and office automation software.
  • Use a variety of culturally proficient approaches to address, manage, and resolve concerns, disagreements, and conflicts. Can find common ground to successfully mediate conflict and build cooperation between individuals and groups with different perspectives.
  • Proficient in providing emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines.

Education and Experience:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate and CPR/First Aid/bloodborne pathogens/AED certification (or obtain prior to the start of the season).
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor (LGI) certification preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in recreation or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in aquatics with at least one year of supervisory experience. Open water lifeguarding experience preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • Valid Washington Driver's License or ability to obtain one by the start of employment

  • Must be insurable by the City's insurance carrier

  • Must be able to pass a criminal history background check as required by law

  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and split shifts

  • Applicant must be able to complete the entire lifeguarding season from early June through August

  • All staff positions at the city are required to be available to report to work during off-hours in case of emergency, and perform duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk or stand for 8 hours per day

  • Has the ability to stoop, squat, twist, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds
