Position Summary:

The Student and School Operations Support Specialist is a key support role at Augsburg Fairview Academy. This position helps maintain a safe, trauma-informed, predictable, and student-centered school environment by assisting with behavior support, building-wide systems, student relationship-building, and daily operations.

The SSOSS works directly with the Executive Team and staff to ensure AFA remains a place where students feel safe, seen, supported, and successful. This is a highly visible role requiring excellent communication, consistency, professionalism, and a strong commitment to AFA's mission of dismantling racism through education, restorative practice, and culturally responsive support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Student Support & Relationship Building

  2. Build positive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed relationships with students.

  3. Support students experiencing dysregulation through calm, grounded, non-punitive strategies.
  4. Assist with escorting, redirection, and emotional regulation support using AFA's restorative, Developmental Designs, and trauma-informed practices.
  5. Serve as a consistent, reliable adult presence throughout the school day.
  6. Support re-entry conversations after conflicts, suspensions, or behavioral incidents at the direction of the Executive Team.

  7. Behavior Response & Trauma-Informed Interventions

  8. Respond to behavior calls and provide support using AFA's trauma-informed and Developmental Designs practices.

  9. Assist the Executive Team and Behavior Team with low- and mid-level behavior interventions, documentation, and follow-up.
  10. Support data collection and incident logging in alignment with AFA protocols.
  11. Uphold professional boundaries and maintain student confidentiality (FERPA compliance).

  12. Systems Fidelity & Schoolwide Operations

  13. Support implementation of AFA's operational systems, including:

  14. Yondr phone pouch system
  15. Hallway and transition monitoring
  16. Arrival and dismissal procedures
  17. Bathroom and common area supervision
  18. Lunchroom routines
  19. Transportation and van coordination
  20. Food service support
  21. Ensure consistency and predictability in applying schoolwide expectations.
  22. Provide coverage for classrooms, supervision zones, and operational gaps as assigned.

  23. Culture, Climate & Community Engagement

  24. Promote a positive, inclusive, student-centered school culture that aligns with AFA's mission, values, and equity focus.

  25. Assist with monthly school events, including set-up, coordination, community engagement, and logistics.
  26. Model restorative practices, Developmental Designs language, and culturally sustaining interactions.
  27. Support staff and students during transitions, high-traffic times, and schoolwide activities.

  28. Safety, Supervision & Crisis Response

  29. Maintain high visibility across the building to ensure safety and monitoring in all student spaces.

  30. Assist with crisis response, safety drills, room clearing, and student supervision during emergencies under the direction of the Executive Team.
  31. Report safety concerns immediately to the Executive Team.
  32. Uphold mandatory reporting requirements and adhere to all AFA safety protocols.

  33. Administrative & Operational Support

  34. Provide clerical and administrative assistance for the Executive Team, including communication support, documentation, student follow-up, and organizational tasks.

  35. Support staff when team members are absent, unavailable, or during peak demand times.
  36. Assist with phone calls, copies, passes, student check-ins, and other office supports.
  37. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and timely communication at all times.

Qualifications:

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm, flexible, and grounded in high-pressure situations
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, restorative practices, and trauma-informed support
  • Ability to move throughout the building frequently and maintain active, visible presence
  • Professionalism, punctuality, and reliability

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a school setting or youth-serving environment
  • Coursework or degree in education, youth work, social work, behavior support, or related field
  • Experience with trauma-responsive strategies, restorative practices, or Developmental Designs

Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday, during school hours, with occasional evening or weekend hours for special events.

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage is competitive and based on experience. Benefits included.
