School Safety Officer

Job Summary:

School Safety Officer (SSO) will manage safety and security programs for the school and will oversee emergency response procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Implements and monitors safety and security protocols.

Provides daily campus patrols to ensure a visible, proactive safety presence.

Manages visitor access, building entry procedures, and supervision of common areas.

Develop plans, procedures, and objectives to facilitate and improve safety and security programs.

Supports administrators in responding to safety concerns, incidents, or violations.

Maintains accurate documentation, incident reports, and safety protocols.

Recommends and implements procedures and best practices to prevent and deter violence at schools or other school properties.

Research and recommends additions and improvements to the safety management program, particularly in areas such as emergency preparedness, accident prevention, general safety, and risk management.

Coordinates with local law enforcement and other appropriate health and safety professionals in matters of public safety involving students and staff.

Evaluates effectiveness of security and surveillance equipment on school properties.

Serves as the first responder to on-campus security threats, following emergency protocols.

Uses firearm only in situations where deadly force is legally justified and as a last resort.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of school safety procedures, emergency response, and de-escalation.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Working knowledge of security technology, reporting systems, and basic computer software.

Education and Experience:

LESOA (Law Enforcement Safety Officers Act) certified.

OSROA (Ohio School Resource Officer Association) membership (must obtain).

College or degree course work in law enforcement or related field.

Five years of experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, or security required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Ability to patrol campus, respond quickly to situations, and access all school areas.

School campus and office setting with daily interaction with students, faculty, parents, and administrators.
