Counter Sales – Merton (9 months fixed term contract) As a Counter Sales colleague at Lawsons Merton, you will be the first point of contact for customers visiting the branch and will provide expert product knowledge, accurate order processing and friendly, efficient service. This is a customer‑facing role that requires good communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a busy branch team. You will support sales, stock management and basic yard duties to ensure customers receive the right products at the right time.
Main Responsibilities – Counter Sales
Deliver excellent customer service at the counter and over the phone, advising customers on products, availability and suitable solutions for their projects.
Process sales accurately using branch systems, prepare invoices and take payments in accordance with company procedures.
Maintain product knowledge across timber, fencing and building materials, keeping up to date with ranges and promotions.
Pick, pack and prepare customer orders for collection or delivery, ensuring orders are accurate and securely packaged.
Assist with stock control activities including receiving deliveries, checking goods in, replenishing the counter and conducting stock counts as required.
Support yard and delivery colleagues with loading goods when required, following safe manual handling and site safety procedures.
Complete accurate paperwork and electronic records for sales, returns and stock movements in line with company systems and policies.
Follow Health & Safety procedures, report incidents and near misses promptly, and contribute to a positive safety culture across the branch.
Essential Skills, Qualities & Experience
Proven experience in counter sales or a customer‑facing role, preferably within a builders’ merchant or trade environment.
Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with trade and retail customers.
Good numeracy and IT skills, with experience of using sales/stock systems and taking payments.
Practical knowledge of building materials is desirable, with a willingness to learn product ranges and technical details.
Physically fit and able to carry out manual handling and yard duties in varied weather conditions.
Organised, reliable and punctual with a flexible approach to support branch needs during busy periods.
Commitment to working safely and adhering to company policies and procedures.
Working Hours, Pay and Benefits
Full‑time, fixed term 9‑month contract. Working hours will be Monday – Friday 08.00 – 17.00, working a total of 40 hours per week.
Annual salary is £32,000. You would receive a pro‑rata of this amount for working 9 months.
Pro‑rata holiday entitlement in line with statutory and company policy.
