POSITION SUMMARY The Mammography Technologist performs diagnostic mammography procedures to assist physicians in the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease. This position operates mammography imaging equipment, ensures high-quality diagnostic images, maintains patient safety and comfort, and complies with all regulatory, quality, and departmental standards. The technologist also documents and communicates results accurately and participates in departmental operations and quality assurance activities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Mammography Technologist is responsible for:
Performing imaging procedures using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Performing mammography services and any related procedures as provided by the department. Utilizing hospital information systems including HIS, RIS, and PACS for patient and imaging management. Verifying physician orders and confirming correct procedures prior to imaging. Explaining procedures to patients and answering questions to ensure understanding and comfort. Maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and modesty at all times. Adhering strictly to patient safety and radiation protection standards. Accurately transcribing physician orders and scheduling patient appointments. Ensuring accurate transmission of imaging results, reports, and other communications. Maintaining thorough documentation and reporting of imaging procedures. Completing required maintenance and quality control documentation for imaging equipment. Additional duties may be assigned to support departmental operations and quality improvement initiatives. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The Mammography Technologist must:
Graduate from an AMA-approved Radiologic Technology program or equivalent, as determined by the Director. Be registered or registry-eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Maintain a current Wyoming Diagnostic Imaging License. Be registered in Mammography through ARRT. Optionally hold registry or registry eligibility with: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (CNMT)
Demonstrate effective communication skills when interacting with patients, families, and the public. Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills. Maintain proficiency in computer applications including: Word processing Spreadsheets Database systems Presentation software Project documentation
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to modify care based on the developmental / functional age of the patient as well as that of the patient's ethnic background. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Required certifications may include:
Basic Life Support (BLS) Current Wyoming Diagnostic Imaging License American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (CNMT) American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to interact with patients, families, visitors and co-workers. Must be able to provide care according to the developmental level and or chronological patient served. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying the needs and abilities of each patient, and demonstrating an understanding of how a patient's chronological and developmental age influences his/her need for adaptations related to his/her abilities. Also, an understanding of how a patient's age impacts his/her ability to deal with and adapt to the care needed/provided is required. General census of neonatal to geriatric patients.
