Job Description
Title: Digital Marketing and Communications Specialist – Communications Department
Location: Central Office
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) serves approximately 22,000 students across a diverse array of schools and programs, and employs about 3,650 staff members.
Job Goal: The Marketing Specialist works as part of the Communications Team to enhance the district’s image and support its vision of being a top 10 school district. The role plans, executes, and analyzes multi‑channel marketing campaigns, manages digital platforms, and ensures consistent, innovative, and data‑driven communications across all audiences with both traditional and digital strategies, including website management.
Essential Functions:
Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaigns for district programs and services.
Collaborate with communications team members to coordinate brand awareness and marketing efforts.
Co‑coordinate the district’s social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.) and manage paid social campaigns, short‑form video, and real‑time engagement.
Analyze data to determine marketing campaign efficiency.
Ensure creative marketing materials undergo regular review and adhere to brand guidelines.
Co‑coordinate internal and external electronic newsletters and manage subscriber lists.
Contribute stories for staff communications tools (e.g., Education Connection, Staff Notebook).
Plan and execute initiatives to reach target audiences through appropriate channels (radio, billboards, social media, print advertising). Provide marketing support for district‑wide special events (United Way, Superintendent’s Honor Roll, Reasons to Believe Celebration, Retirement Banquet, Convocation).
Prepare marketing materials for district staff before publication.
Possess basic design skills and create designs that reflect district brand standards (flyers, advertisements, postcards, invitations, banners, brochures).
Support and collaborate with Communications Team members to complete school‑wide initiatives.
Assist in the development of videotaping assignments as assigned.
Develop, implement, and analyze creative, multi‑channel marketing campaigns for district programs and initiatives, leveraging digital, print, and emerging platforms.
Co‑manage and create content for all district social media channels, including paid social campaigns, short‑form video, and real‑time engagement.
Monitor, analyze, and report on social media and digital campaign performance using analytics tools; recommend and implement strategies for growth and engagement.
Manage and update district website content, ensuring accuracy, accessibility (ADA compliance), and alignment with brand standards; collaborate with IT and Communications to implement improvements and new features.
Optimize website content for search engines (SEO) and monitor analytics to inform content strategy and improve user experience.
Coordinate and design digital newsletters and email marketing campaigns; manage subscriber lists and analyze engagement metrics.
Create compelling written, visual, and video content tailored to diverse audiences (students, families, staff, community).
Maintain and enforce brand guidelines across all digital and print materials.
Provide marketing support for internal and external communications, including crisis communications and rapid‑response messaging.
Stay current on digital marketing trends, tools, and best practices; recommend and implement innovative strategies to enhance district communications.
Mentor and share expertise with team members, supporting specialization and professional growth within the team.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Video editing skills required.
Experience managing website content and using CMS.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Experience with writing newsletters, marketing campaigns, advertising copy.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom) preferred.
Ability to work in a high‑stress environment while meeting multiple deadlines.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with district staff, media personnel, parents, students, and community groups.
Ability to proofread prose and graphic materials and edit the work of others.
Ability to use good judgment and maintain confidentiality when necessary.
Communication / Organization: Maintains communication with school personnel, parents/guardians, internal and external customers to enhance cooperative action that meets educational needs, utilizing existing technology effectively.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interprets instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals and technical procedures; writes reports, correspondence, and protocols; presents information and responds to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.
Physical Demands: Requires sitting, walking, standing, talking; occasionally lifts or moves up to 50 lbs; may push items of similar weight; may visit a child’s home; requires close and distance vision and depth perception.
Work Environment: Standard office environment; noise level usually loud, acceptable for this environment.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
Terms of Employment: 261 days
Salary: According to the KCKPS Salary Schedule
FLSA Status: Exempt
Report To: Director of Communications and Marketing
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy.
