Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Information and Technology, Field Support Directorate, Northeast Region, located in Queens, NY. Additional selections may be made for other organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above. This position starts at a salary of $72,737.00 (GS‑09, Step 1) to $114,413.00 (GS‑11, Step 10) with promotion potential to $137,128 (GS‑12 Step 10).
Duties In this Information and Technology Specialist position, you will serve as a Field Technology Officer in the Field Support Directorate (FSD) within the Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Enterprise Services, where you will be part of a technical team(s) that implements complex technological solutions and maintains operational availability. Typical work assignments include: diagnosing and resolving problems in response to customer‑reported incidents; researching, evaluating and providing feedback on problematic trends and patterns; interacting with internal and external stakeholders as the subject‑matter expert to provide IT guidance and solutions; installing, configuring, integrating, troubleshooting, optimizing and maintaining customer hardware and software; identifying and specifying information system security requirements and ensuring application of information security/information assurance policies, principles and practices.
Requirements
U.S. citizenship; males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
Pre‑employment processes conducted in English.
Background investigation required.
DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures.
CBP ethics and conflict‑of‑interest rules apply.
Obtain an official passport if required for international duty assignments.
Valid state driver’s license at time of appointment; position may be on call 24/7 and require unscheduled overtime.
Physical demands: lifting/moving equipment up to 50 lb, climbing ladders, working in an electronics shop or remote sites.

Experience GS‑09
At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including testing, installing, configuring, and maintaining networks (hardware, middleware, and software).
Consulting and ensuring IT security assurance policies and principles.
Developing and administering local IT databases.
GS‑11
At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including analyzing, planning, integrating, and configuring network systems hardware.
Diagnosing and resolving network problems, hardware/software interface and interoperability problems.
Testing, installing, configuring and maintaining networks to ensure conformance to national standards.
Evaluating new hardware and software technologies for potential inclusion into the enterprise.
Education
GS‑09: Successful completion of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressive graduate education leading to such a degree, may be substituted for experience.
GS‑11: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressive graduate education leading to such a degree, may be substituted for experience.
Applicable degrees include computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, technology management or equivalent graduate coursework with at least 24 semester hours pertinent to these fields.
