Job Overview The Planning and Development Department is actively seeking a Professional Architect. This professional architectural work at the lead worker level involves planning, reviewing, and designing new buildings, facilities, structures, and renovations or expansions. Responsibilities include coordinating activities, reviewing work, and ensuring compliance with Florida Building Code and other program requirements. The work is performed in office and field environments and requires operating office equipment and motor vehicle as needed.
Responsibilities
Oversee and review the design and preparation of plans, specifications and engineering cost estimates for municipal projects requiring architectural services to include capital improvement projects and proposed project applications for building permitting.
Plan, design, review, and prepare schematic diagrams for construction or renovation of buildings, facilities, and structures.
Prepare construction contract documents for bidding.
Prepare cost estimates.
Review design drawings and specifications for compliance with Florida Building Code, program requirements, scope of work, and budgetary considerations.
Review and approve payments to consultants for work completed.
Schedule and conduct design coordination meetings.
Review shop drawings submitted by contractors.
Review completed buildings and construction projects for compliance with drawings, specifications, building code, and workmanship standards.
Provide updated estimates for design, construction, or land acquisition needs of city agencies by planning future maintenance, renovations, or capital improvement costs.
Operate standard office equipment such as personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database and construction‑related software.
Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
Perform related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the practices and principles of architecture.
Knowledge of materials and methods of building construction.
Skill in the use of architectural instruments and equipment.
Ability to plan, review and design buildings and other structures.
Ability to prepare construction contract documents and specifications.
Ability to communicate effectively with the public and others.
Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate, and review the work of others.
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and construction‑related software.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Open Requirements / Supplemental Information
Eight (8) years of education and/or experience in architectural work.
Other Requirements
The probationary period for this classification is 6 months.
Licensing / Certification / Registration
A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
FLA Professional Architect Registration is required and must be maintained.
If an active Professional Licensed Architect from another state, must transfer or obtain registration in Florida as a Professional Architect within 6 months of employment.
