Elementary Assistant Principal

The position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the coordination, supervision and management of the school program and operation.

Essential functions include:

  • Assisting the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the School Board.
  • Assisting the principal in the overall administration of the school; interpreting and enforcing school and school division policies and regulations.
  • Meeting and conferring with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Serving as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  • Proposing schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; helping schedule courses, students and teachers.
  • Working with department heads and faculty in compiling the annual budget requests.
  • Requisiting supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conducting inventories; maintaining records, and checking on receipts for such material.
  • Assisting in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other school support services.
  • Assisting in conducting safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  • Assisting in the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
  • Assisting in maintaining discipline throughout the student body.
  • Serving with parents, faculty, and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  • Maintaining a variety of files and records; preparing periodic and special reports as required.
  • Identifying the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
  • Supervising and evaluating teachers and departments as assigned by the principal.
  • Explaining and interpreting division-wide curriculum/instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, pupils, and the community.
  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of a systematic method of supervising the instructional program through the use of observations, documentation, and data and follow-up conferences.
  • Assisting teachers in evaluating methods and materials and developing effective lesson plans and classroom preparation.
  • Assisting in the coordination and supervision of guidance and counseling services.
  • Helping supervise curriculum planning; making studies of curriculum in cooperation with department heads, team leaders, grade-level chairpersons, and central office representatives.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Education and experience required include a Master's Degree and a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level. Must hold or be eligible to receive a Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12.

Physical requirements include light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work requires reaching, pushing, and pulling, use of hands to grasp, handle or feel, fine manipulation, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
