Electrical Engineer (Automation and Controls)

What if your electrical designs came to life aboard large vessels, project after project, with no two ever the same?

Hi, I'm currently hiring an Electrical Engineer in automation and controls for an international company specialized in complete heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems for the marine sector, with offices across several continents and based on the South Shore of Montreal. Here, every vessel is different: you design custom, never copy-paste. I'm writing this with someone in mind who loves to design, program, and then watch their system come to life for real.

Why this role will appeal to you

You're joining a growing technical team, in a market backed by steady demand for the years ahead. It's a complete role, from the drawing board to commissioning aboard: you own your system end to end. You work in pairs with experienced people, in a continuous-improvement culture where teamwork genuinely matters. Few environments offer this full loop between design and the field.

What your days look like

Your week is split between design at your desk, follow-up in the shop and, occasionally, the field for commissioning. You work closely with the automation and mechanical teams, and you quickly become the electrical go-to on your projects.

  • You design control panels and enclosures in AutoCAD Electrical and produce the related wiring diagrams.
  • You program and configure PLCs and HMIs (Siemens TIA Portal and Logo Controller, Beijer).
  • You supervise control panel fabrication and run full testing, through to Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
  • You take charge of start-up and commissioning of HVAC-R systems, including point-to-point commissioning of sensors and inputs.
  • You troubleshoot equipment and controls with a genuine root-cause approach.
  • You support field engineers during start-up and act as a mentor to junior engineers.

The profile I'm looking for

What you bring

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or instrumentation.
  • Experience in automation and controls, with real custom design experience (not just integrating preconfigured solutions).
  • Command of AutoCAD Electrical for panel design (EPLAN or SEE Electrical transferable).
  • PLC programming with Siemens (TIA Portal, Logo) and Beijer, and experience with various PLC and industrial control systems.
  • Functional English and French (frequent communication with North American offices and clients).
  • Willingness to travel about 15% of the time, for commissioning sessions of one to two weeks.

What will make you succeed

  • You're autonomous and resourceful: you move a file forward without hand-holding.
  • You enjoy the back and forth between design and the field, and you thrive on concrete projects.
  • You have the attention to detail and rigor a first-time-right system demands.
  • You're a real team player, comfortable in a growing, project-paced environment.

What you get

  • Compensation of $100,000 to $130,000 CAD per year, with a bonus program.
  • A retirement program with employer contribution.
  • Full group insurance (life, health, dental, short- and long-term disability), with several coverage options.
  • A hybrid role and Friday afternoons off year-round.
  • A wellness program, team activities and socials, and a recognition program.
  • Custom, stimulating projects where your work ends up in real installations.
