Athletic Trainer/Sports Medicine Teacher The Athletic Trainer develops and implements an athletic training program and a sports medicine instructional program that will effectively meet the needs of all students. The Athletic Trainer evaluates and treats sport related injuries as well as student performance in the classroom. The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians, allied health professionals and administrative personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school. The Athletic Trainer:
Prevents athletic injuries. Recognizes, evaluates and cares for athletic injuries. Assesses the type of injury, rehabilitates and reconditions athletic injuries to minimize the risk of re-injury. Refers injured athletes to appropriate medical professionals when necessary. Manages health care including medical record keeping, documentation and reporting. Establishes policies and procedures related to athletic training. Oversees the budget and inventory of the athletic training program. Educates and trains coaches, parents, and student athletes. Supervises and trains student assistants. Supervises athletic practices and athletic home events. Completes required reports promptly and accurately. Accepts responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to the school. Assumes responsibility for care of materials, equipment and facilities. Assumes responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to the teacher's care. Practices and promotes positive interaction with and among students. Demonstrates enthusiasm for learning. Demonstrates interest in students and athletes. Encourages self-direction and self-motivation in students and athletes. Adapts and adjusts instructional presentation of subject content to students' needs and interests. Maintains and organizes a program of instruction based on effective long-range plans. Exhibits evidence of effective lesson planning. Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources. Communicates the lesson objective and its importance to students. Utilizes appropriate and varied teaching techniques and learning activities both in class and out of class. Maintains an effective system of monitoring student progress and to inform appropriate persons of such progress.
Education Attainment (Required): Bachelor's degree Industry Licensure or Certifications (Required): Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license which meets Commonwealth of Virginia requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned. Required Licensures and Certifications:
Must hold current CPR/First Aid certification. Hold National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
