Clinical Medical Assistant

The Clinical Medical Assistant works independently with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality health care in the clinic setting. The Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by clinical leadership.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recording patient intake including vital signs, allergies and medications;
  • Performing procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid;
  • Assisting providers during procedures and chaperoning sensitive exams;
  • Following OSHA safety practices, including handling of biohazard materials;
  • Maintaining a safe environment for staff and patients by proper sterilization of instruments and cleaning and stocking of supplies; and
  • Maintaining competency and knowledge in all skills by participating in orientation, ongoing training, and annual infection control training and competency review.

Laboratory/Phlebotomy techniques and safety practices include:

  • Safely operating and maintaining all laboratory equipment;
  • Performing CLIA waived testing;
  • Accurately documenting laboratory test results;
  • Properly storing and handling hazardous materials, cleaning agents and potentially infectious materials; and
  • Upon completion of lab orientation, maintaining competency in all laboratory procedures.

Administering immunizations includes:

  • Safely and accurately administering immunizations;
  • Participating in annual safe injection practice training and maintaining knowledge through ongoing CDC training; and
  • Following CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations, and informing patients regarding required and administered vaccines.

Departmental/Divisional duties include:

  • Participating as a member of an SHS committee, attending quarterly meetings, following through on assignments, and contributing to the maintenance of high-quality healthcare;
  • Supporting divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned, acting as a technical resource and SME as required;
  • Actively participating in University Life divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration;
  • Participating in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement;
  • Staying informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SHS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant or comparable experience gained through military, EMT training or 2+ years experience working as a medical assistant in an outpatient setting;
  • Experience gained through training programs equivalent to a Medical Assistant certification or comparable experience gained through military, EMT training, or working in a ambulatory care setting such as primary care or urgent care;
  • Experience working with college-aged students;
  • Experience providing effective customer service.
  • Knowledge of ambulatory care practices;
  • Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunizations;
  • Knowledge of guidelines for handling potentially infectious and hazardous materials and OSHA guidelines;
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs and performing other diagnostic procedures, such as EKGs;
  • Skills in safely administering injections;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to use Electronic Medical Records;
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and CLIA waived testing and operate laboratory equipment; and
  • Ability to protect patient privacy and provide welcoming demeanor to all patients.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Associate's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience typically obtained in 1+ years as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient setting or in a role equivalent to a Medical Assistant working in an outpatient setting;
  • Ability to manage patient load and the needs of the providers, gained through experience in an outpatient setting; and
  • Ability to inform patients about immunizations and administer vaccines.
