Job Description Summary Join GE Vernova’s Grid Automation R&D team to spearhead the next generation of power system protection. As a Lead Power Systems Protection & Control Application Engineer, you will bridge the gap between complex power system theory and real-world algorithm implementation, playing a pivotal role in the global transition to sustainable, green energy.
The Lead Application Engineer will provide solutions and create detailed design specification related to power system protection algorithms. The successful candidate will be a solid team player, with a methodical and structured approach to their work, with excellent verbal and written communication skills with comprehensive understanding of power systems and power system protection concepts and principles. Essential Responsibilities

  • To create detailed design specifications for implementation of protection and control (P&C) algorithms.
  • Proof of concept studies using PSCAD or RTDS or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Drive the root cause analysis of the incidents related to the power system protection algorithms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues related to the algorithm, product, and other customer cases.
  • Author technical papers and present materials at tradeshows and conferences for GE Vernova’s products.
  • Assist in preparing training material and deliver training courses, where required.
  • Identify opportunities for patentable innovations to strengthen GE Vernova’s Intellectual Property portfolio in digital substation technologies.
  • Provide technical guidance, direction, and training to new engineers, specialists, technicians when required.
  • Analyse market trends and requirements to propose new developments in GE Vernova’s Digital Energy products.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution, or equivalent knowledge or experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in protection and control system design and studies. And minimum of 3 years experience in developing detailed design specifications for P&C algorithms preferably within a relay manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive experience in power system protection, automation, and control product development.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink for model-based design and power system simulation tools such as RTDS, PSCAD or ATP/EMTP.
  • Proven track record of publishing and presenting at industry forums and conferences
  • Familiarity with industry standards and documentation procedures of electrical utilities.
  • Knowledge of modern protection and control and distribution automation developments and trends.

Desired Characteristics

  • Field experience will be beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of GEV protections, networking, and substation automation products is preferred.
  • Deep knowledge in power system protection.
  • Experience in developing power system protection and control applications in Real Time Controller market.
  • Familiarity of communication protocols applicable to P&C (such as IEC61850, Modbus, DNP3.0 and IEC60870-5-103).

For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $92,300 and $142,300 CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
