Botany Bay is a fast-growing cannabis management company in the Midwest. In the past couple years we’ve created and built some of the most exciting new cannabis brands, including Midweek Friday, Alchemy, Interstate 420, RisEau, nuEra and Prairie Cannabis. We provide services to licensed retail, cultivation and processing operations in Illinois and the brand new Kentucky medical cannabis market. Position Overview We’re looking for a dynamic and creative Content Marketing Specialist to play a pivotal role in our marketing team. This position offers the chance to not just be a part of, but actively shape, the voice and presence of all the brands we manage across multiple platforms. Reporting directly to the Marketing Director, you will spearhead all our content marketing efforts, manage our social media presence across various brands, and craft compelling and memorable messages across all platforms.
This is a hybrid position that will be a mix of remote and office work, and requires occasional travel within Illinois and Kentucky.
Responsibilities Content Strategy & Creation
Develop and execute a content marketing plan that supports brand awareness, engagement, and growth across a multi‑brand cannabis portfolio.
Create compelling, SEO‑mindful content across channels, including social media, blogs, websites, email, press releases, and digital and print marketing materials.
Visual & Brand Design
Design and produce visual assets for marketing campaigns, events, swag, and branded materials while maintaining consistent brand standards across all platforms.
Education & Training Content
Create educational and training materials for internal teams, wholesale partners, retail dispensary staff and customers alike, including presentations, one‑pagers, and product guides related to cannabis products, retail experiences, and brand storytelling.
Social Media & Influencer Marketing
Own social media execution, including content calendars, posting, community engagement, short‑form video, influencer collaboration, and performance analysis that align with monthly campaigns.
Website & Digital Presence
Maintain and optimize brand websites, ensuring content accuracy, visual consistency, SEO best practices, and timely updates.
Manage and optimize brand presence across Google Business Profiles, Yelp, and other online listing platforms.
Public Relations & Communications
Publish and distribute press releases through wire services and media channels as needed.
Collaboration & Content Sourcing
Collaborate closely with sales, marketing, and leadership teams to support training initiatives, product launches, and campaigns.
Coordinate with on‑site teams across retail and cultivation facilities to source photos, videos, and stories, coaching employees to consistently provide usable, on‑brand content.
Analytics & Optimization
Collect, analyze, and report on performance metrics across social media, web, and content campaigns to inform strategy and ongoing optimization.
Stay current on SEO trends, platform updates, and content marketing best practices, applying them across all content efforts.
Qualifications
You love cannabis culture, and you are excited about the opportunity to work in the early stages of a growth industry.
You are absolutely bursting with creativity, and have a strong track record in making content people love, whether it’s articles, videos, reels or infographics.
You are an internet creature. You know what’s cool and trending, you’re on top of the memes, and you know how to make us part of “The Conversation.”
Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to create engaging, and SEO‑optimized blog , product , and educational content for a variety of audiences (and you know that a TikTok video cannot have the same tone as a flyer on “aging better with the help of cannabis”).
A sharp eye for design with a minimum of 3 years of hands‑on experience creating polished visual content using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator; InDesign), Figma , Canva , and equivalent platforms. Photography and video creation/editing experience is a plus.
Working knowledge of video editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro , Final Cut Pro , CapCut , or similar.
Familiarity with content management systems like WordPress , Webflow , or similar, including basic content updates, formatting, and page optimization.
SEO‑mindful approach to content creation, with experience using tools such as Google Search Console, SEMrush and Google Analytics (GA4) to guide optimization and measure performance.
Familiarity with press release creation and distribution through wire services like PR Newswire, GlobeNewswire, Business Wire , or equivalent platforms.
Experience managing and publishing content across major social platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, LinkedIn , and emerging channels, using scheduling tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Later, Buffer , or native platform tools.
Experience managing brand presence on Google Business Profile, Yelp , with Cannabis specific platforms like Leafly and Weedmaps are a plus.
Experience in cannabis, consumer packaged goods (CPG), or retail is a huge plus.
Superior communication and teamwork skills, with a history of producing high‑quality collaborative work. You can herd cats, and thrive in fast‑paced, deadline‑driven cultures.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once; experience with project management tools such as Asana, Monday, Notion, Trello, or ClickUp is a plus.
Comfortable collaborating cross‑functionally using tools like Google Workspace and Slack in a fast‑paced team environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or related fields, or equivalent experience.
Additional Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
Must comply with all legal state requirements to work in an Illinois licensed cannabis operation.
