Key Responsibilities Health & Safety The Occupational Therapy Assistant will: Be aware of and implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards Comply, at all times, with all relevant Statutory /HSE /SVUH /Departmental Regulations, Policies, Guidelines, Procedures and Protocols in relation to all aspects of safety and patient/staff care Promote a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety legislation Actively participate in risk management issues, identify risks and take responsibility for appropriate action Report any adverse incidents in accordance with organisational guidelines Be familiar with Incident Reporting and Risk Management Protocols, Complaints Procedure, and other relevant policies appropriate to the Occupational Therapy service Ensure that standards are maintained in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation Operate within the scope of Occupational Therapy practice as directed by the supervising Occupational Therapist &/or Occupational Therapist Manager in accordance with local and national guidelines Education and Training The Occupational Therapy Assistant will: Participate in mandatory training as required: Health and Safety, Infection Prevention & Control, Hand Hygiene, Children First, Fire Prevention and Control, Patient Moving and Handling, etc. and any other relevant training Undertake relevant recommended training including in-service training in skills required to carry out the necessary functions of the Occupational Therapy Assistant role as deemed appropriate by the Supervising Occupational Therapist &/or Occupational Therapist Manager Assist in inducting new staff to the department as designated by the Occupational Therapist Manager or designate Participate in training and development including in-service training, attending courses relevant to their role as agreed by the Occupational Therapist Manager Engage in peer support with other Occupational Therapy Assistants as appropriate Participate in the practice education of student therapists and other students who attend the occupational therapy department as part of their training Develop and maintain knowledge and skills in the relevant clinical areas relevant to their area of work as allocated by their supervising occupational therapist or the Occupational Therapist Manager Participate as appropriate in department run training programmes / courses for internal and external occupational therapists / specialist clinicians. Clinical Duties The Occupational Therapy Assistant will: Comply with all relevant department procedures including and not limited to documentation for patient's Healthcare Record, maintenance of patient files, compilation of equipment and stock levels and collection of statistical data Assist a qualified Occupational Therapist in completing Personal Activities of Daily Living (PADL) / Domestic Activities of Daily Living (DADL) assessments and treatments under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist. Assist with patient's needs during the completion of (PADLs/DADLs) in accordance with the philosophy of occupational therapy Assist the Occupational Therapist with patient transfers functional mobility assessments / treatments / retraining Arrange transport to / from the occupational therapy department and inform the relevant individuals before and after treatment sessions Assist with individual and group activities under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist Assist the Occupational Therapist in the provision of specialist seating systems, wheelchairs, orthopaedic / adjustable height chairs, pressure relieving cushions or other equipment as prescribed by the Occupational Therapist Assist with moving and handling of patients for examinations/assessments /treatment when necessary in accordance with the SVUH Manual Handling Training Assist the Occupational Therapist with engaging the patient in functional tasks and rehabilitation activities with patients as required Assist with confused or agitated patients while in the department and remain with and monitor patients that require supervision Assist and supervise patients, who require assistance, to the toilet if required during assessment / treatment sessions in accordance with SVUH Manual Handling Training Prepare a patient / treatment area / equipment for patients and cleaning of treatment area / equipment as requested by the Occupational Therapist Assist the Occupational Therapist in the fabrication of customised orthosis / splints Assist the Occupational Therapist with scheduling and / or completion of a Home Visit Assessment if indicated Assist in the correct disposal of clinical and other waste including the checking and appropriate disposal and replacement of sharps boxes Change linen, and to sort used linen and place for collection in the appropriate location in line with hospital and departmental practice Maintenance of treatment areas, ensuring all treatment areas are adherent to infection control guidelines and suitable for patient use. Maintenance and organising cleaning of all equipment returned to the OT department from SVUH inpatient wards and community. Audit & Development The Occupational Therapy Assistant will: Participate in the collation of data as requested to contribute to Audits and / Research Participate in new development to advance / promote occupational therapy practice Administrative The Occupational Therapy Assistant will: Notify the Occupational Therapist Manager of sickness, annual leave and all other types of leave in accordance with the relevant SVUH and Occupational Therapy Department policies Document in the patient's Healthcare Records and other documentation in line with best clinical governance, organisational requirements and the Freedom of Information Act, GDPR and provide reports and other information / statistics as required Represent the department / team at meetings as appropriate Liaise with the Occupational Therapist Manager regarding the needs, interests and perspective of Occupational Therapy staff Promote good team working, and a culture that values diversity Participate in the management of Occupational Therapy stock and equipment in conjunction with the Occupational Therapist Manager and designated others Engage in IT developments as they apply to the service and its administration Keep up to date with developments within the organisation and the Irish Health Service Plan leave (including annual / study) within the inpatient staffing cohort to ensure that occupational therapy assistant cover is adequate across the inpatient services Undertake administrative tasks including but not limited to completing statistics, collect patient documentation and charts from the relevant departments/wards, filing, tracking equipment etc. as needed To take Assist with printing, photocopying, administrative duties Assist with stock control, equipment orders and other stock related tasks as required Record all equipment or stock items which are on loan, returned or missing Report any equipment items etc., which require repair /maintenance / asset tagging etc. Unpack and store in the designated areas all equipment that has been delivered to the department from SVUH Stores, Community Services and individual suppliers To undertake such other duties appropriate to his/her post as may be assigned on occasion to him/her by the Occupational Therapist Manager.
