Pay Grade: Assistant Principal Scale

Period of Employment: 11 Months

FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Elementary and High School Principals

Location: Colonial Beach Elementary and High School

General Responsibilities: The position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the planning, organization, administration, and management of the elementary and high school. The position assists with supervising staff, maintaining a safe environment, monitoring instruction, and other duties associated with the successful operation of an elementary school and a high school.

Essential Duties:

Essential Responsibilities:

Assists in the planning, development, organization, coordination, and supervision of instructional programs and activities for both schools

Assists in providing leadership to the professional staff in determining objectives and identifying school needs as the basis for developing long and short-range plans for both schools

Assists the school principal in the supervision and performance evaluation of staff at both schools

Assists in the supervision of student enrollment, records, attendance, and health requirements for both schools

Develops plans for emergencies, in cooperation with staff and public safety agencies for both schools

Relates to students with mutual respect while carrying out a positive and effective discipline policy at both schools

Consults with student services personnel to find long-term solutions to student attendance concerns and inappropriate student behavior at both schools

Knows local policies and state and federal laws relating to minors

Knowledge of the state testing regulations and procedures, and to serve as the school testing coordinator at the elementary school

Assists the school principal in ensuring that the school's policies and procedures related to student discipline referrals and discipline action plans meet state, federal, and division requirements at both schools

Assists in the child study and eligibility process at both schools

Attends and supervises after-school, evening, and weekend school-sponsored events and activities as assigned at both schools

Performs informal and formal classroom observations and conferences with teachers to improve the instructional program at both schools

Monitors halls, school grounds, and pupil movement to ensure a smart, safe environment at both schools

Facilitate SBIT meetings (school-based intervention team meetings)

Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Has knowledge of and the implementation of Positive Intervention Behavior and Supports (PBIS) (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)/Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS) and Restorative Practices)

Has demonstrated the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and parents

Education or Equivalency Requirements:

Preferred - Master's Degree

Certification/Licenses - Description:

State - Administration and Supervision Endorsement required

Work Experience:

Equivalent to or at least: - Type: - Area or Field

3 years - Specific - Experience as a successful instructional teacher

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact, as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required.
