Associate Dean

The Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), supports the Dean in overseeing the College to enhance its visibility, effectiveness, and impact, and the administration of the College personnel, financial, and administrative affairs. Exercises independent judgment, and handles a highly diversified mixture of responsibilities in one or several specialized areas. May represent or assume authority for the unit in the absence of the dean.

The Office of the Dean is responsible for administration and execution of CAS policies, and is responsible for 12 diverse departments, offering 41 undergraduate degree programs, 12 graduate programs, and 7 post-baccalaureate certificates. The office also provides oversight for 5 special programs: CSU-TV, WCSU Radio, Military Science, Pre-Law Education, and Pre-Medical Education; and 4 centers: Calumet Environmental Resource Center (CERC), The Center for STEM Education (CSER), the Neighborhood Assistance Center, and the Center for Information and Security Education and Research (CINSER). Primary responsibilities include demonstrating awareness of current local, national and international trends and opportunities in education to advance the College, fostering a climate of research and innovation to impact educational outcomes in all levels of education, leading enrollment, retention, and graduation efforts across the college (ERG), promoting professional development and innovation to ensure competence and effectiveness of College faculty, staff and graduates, sustaining productive working relationships with faculty, students, university administrators, alumni and the broader community on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, assisting engagement with government and professional agencies and associations, assisting department chairs with data analysis and decision making related to Program Review, Accreditation, and ERG, demonstrating commitment to shared governance; commitment to innovation, inter-professional education and administrative flexibility; and a strong commitment to developing and sustaining community partnerships, assisting students with academic petitions, issues, concerns; attending student affairs meetings, chairing the Faculty-Student Relations Committee, chairing the CAS Education Council, being an ex officio member of the CAS General Education Council and CAS Curriculum Committee, and serving as a liaison with the College of Education for the CAS teacher education programs, and assisting the Dean with day to day responsibilities as needed, performing other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree for tenure from a regionally accredited institution, and have an excellent record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits tenure at the level of Professor at Chicago State University. The candidate should have at least five years of administrative experience in a university. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a successful record of decision making, management, and administrative experience including setting priorities, managing diverse personnel and complex budgets; an exemplary record of promoting scholarship and research; experience in recruiting and retaining students, advancing student success, and building academic excellence; excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess an outstanding record of leadership, advocacy, and community partnership. Experience with assessment and accreditation Teaching experience at the university level including experience teaching at the graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with urban, collective bargaining educational systems; demonstrates a collaborative and open communication and management style with an ability to build relationships within and beyond the College and possess enrollment management skills to achieve higher rates of retention and graduation. Ability to articulate the College's mission, goals, accomplishments, and needs to a broad range of external constituencies, including alumni, academic, government representatives, and business communities. Passion for facilitating the success of others, including faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders. Outstanding communication skills with strong interpersonal skills Demonstrated ability to lead by consensus and with transparency. Experience in supporting and cultivating a distinguished, accomplished, and diverse faculty.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have a proven and demonstrated outstanding record in teaching, mentoring, and directing research of undergraduate and graduate students; a commitment to shared governance, indicators of innovative planning, outcomes and administrative flexibility; and a strong record of grantsmanship. They must demonstrate a deep understanding of retention and timely graduation with a particular emphasis on culturally diverse and non-traditional student populations. Must demonstrate awareness of current local, national, and international opportunities in higher education; especially, use of technology and industrial partnership, and must have the vision and ability to harness them to advance the progress of the college. Must have the ability to lead the faculty in governance, promoting a culture of excellence and service, and fostering research and innovation. Engage in strategic planning, allocating resources, recruiting outstanding faculty, and the ability to progressively lead the college toward great academic purpose.
