Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant will perform various office and clinical duties to maintain the healthcare practice efficiently. The medical assistant will work directly with nursing staff to preserve and maintain a high level of care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine administrative duties such as filing, scanning, and answering telephones.
  • Request and process medical records and record requests.
  • Assist in scheduling/managing outside appointments for youth.
  • Laboratory specimen collection and documentation.
  • Obtain and document routine vital signs.
  • Perform hearing and snellen eye exams.
  • Supervise/chaperone youth during sick call.
  • Collects and maintains immunization records.
  • Administers immunizations per recommend dosing schedule.
  • Performs Vaccine for Children vaccine ordering; and auditing for the program.
  • Contacts guardians, facilities, and residential placements for medical information.
  • Assist in the completion of placement packets and release forms.
  • Assists with audit preparation and chart review.
  • Inventories external and internal medications, and maintains Par levels of clinic supplies by assisting in the ordering process.
  • Creates, maintains, and updates databases and/or spreadsheets of information specific to the department.
  • Extract, analyze, and report statistical data.
  • Index and catalog youth/medical photographs.

Requirements:

  • All applicants must register and take the HRT Clerical Skills Test and score a minimum of 85%.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Employees in this position must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's license and maintain liability insurance coverage at least equal to the minimum amounts required by law.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • Must have current CPR certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must pass the Microsoft Office Applications clerical test with 85% proficiency.
  • Knowledge of applicable pharmacy rules and regulations.
  • Understanding of Standard/Universal Precautions and infection control procedures for dealing with sharp instruments, blood and body Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and the departmental data systems.
  • Knowledge of the division/department/facility that assigned.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records and contents.
  • Understand and follow confidentiality policies and laws pertaining to Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Maintain open communication with supervisors, pertinent divisions and external agencies to maximize the services in accordance to the individual needs of the facility.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality, without breeching regulations/guidelines/laws pertaining to the sharing of protected health information.
  • Must be 21 years of age.

Additional Requirements:

  • Upon receiving a conditional job offer, all applicants must undergo a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • All applicants must provide evidence of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. If the attest result is positive, additional documentation will be required.
  • All employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as well as testing based on reasonable suspicion that the employee may be under the influence of a substance prohibited by the county's drug and alcohol policy during the course and scope of employment.
  • In the event of a public emergency declared by the county, staff may be assigned to other duties, facilities, or departments under the supervision of another county department.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Certified copies of educational transcripts and/or college credits will be required during the hiring process.
  • This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Preferences:

  • Minimum of at least one (1) year of working with adolescents and/or correctional care nursing experience.
