The Museum of the City of New York is seeking a thoughtful and detail-oriented Graphic Designer to support the development of high-quality visual materials across print and digital platforms. This role will play a key part in translating the Museum’s brand into clear, compelling, and visually engaging communications.
Roles and Responsibilities
Design and produce a wide range of branded materials, including marketing collateral, exhibition graphics, signage, digital assets, and web content
Apply and uphold the Museum’s visual identity with consistency, attention to detail, and strong typographic sensibility
Collaborate with internal stakeholders across departments (Marketing, Public Programs, Exhibitions, Development, Education) to understand project needs and deliver effective design solutions
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining timelines and balancing competing priorities
Prepare production-ready files for print and digital use, coordinating with vendors as needed
Review proofs and run quality checks
And other duties as assigned
A successful candidate will have
Minimum of 2+ years of professional graphic design experience
Strong portfolio demonstrating thoughtful, well-executed print and digital work within established brand systems
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop; additional tools appreciated)
Solid understanding of typography, layout, and visual hierarchy
Strong organizational and project management skills
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
Motion graphics, illustration, 3D design, knowledge of Microsoft Suite are a plus

Physical Requirements & Work Environment While performing the essential functions of the job, this role primarily works Monday‑Friday covering 20 hours a week. Work is primarily onsite at the Museum, in an open office plan setting. The Museum environment is fast‑paced and workspaces include the Museum’s galleries and classroom spaces. The employee must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and be able to traverse through office and museum gallery environments. The role requires the use of standard office equipment including computers and keyboards for extended periods. The employee may be required to lift up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, repetitively move objects, and perform intricate manual tasks that involve substantial wrist, hand, and finger movements. Close visual acuity is needed for activities such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, and other visual tasks. On occasion, the employee may be required to work outside events with weather conditions including heat and cold.
The hourly rate for this position is $25.00. Your employment relationship with the Museum qualifies you for free or discounted admissions to other participating cultural institutions.
