POSITION OVERVIEW The Design Engineer position supports both the Engineering and Sales teams across ISAT’s nationwide branches. You will be responsible for preparing custom engineering packages, providing technical support, producing accurate drawings, managing project files, and working closely with internal and external partners to deliver exceptional engineering solutions.
This role blends engineering design, project coordination, technical communication, and product knowledge.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist Custom Engineering Lead/Project Manager – will assign all engineering tasks; may also be assigned directly to a project management team; should be in constant contact with whomever they directly report to, updating them on tasks and letting them know their status at the end of day.
Custom Engineer – responsible for daily custom engineering packages which typically include, but are not limited to, basic anchor calculations, custom suspended support designs, wall supports, riser supports, and roof mounted designs.
Billing – must understand our billing tracking software (Nexus) and how to input all hours whether it is for a project, administrative, or personal leave.
Gather Information for Custom Engineering Packages (Basic) – with the assistance of Senior Engineers, must be able to communicate with PMs, sales staff, and even clients to obtain all necessary information regarding the engineering documents needed for your tasks.
Custom Engineer Package Submittals – must be able to build basic custom engineering submittals including coversheets, backup calculations, and supporting documents.
Detail Drafting – must be able to create accurate details using AutoCAD and/or Revit for all custom engineering packages using the right annotations, scale, and callouts for such things as welds, torque, and correct parts and pieces.
Generate Quotes – work directly with Salesmen and Branch PMs to help generate scope of work forms and quotations for services.
Seismic Layouts – must have in depth knowledge of the ISAT manual and rules for laying out standard bracing, including how to create a bracing legend, coversheet, and correctly annotated layout on projects for all trades, configurations, and for the CBC, IBC, and UFC.
Product Knowledge – have an in depth knowledge of what products/parts could be utilized on projects and be able to apply the ISAT line of supported products, create and catalog new applications of support systems and help create better solutions for the future.
Communication – must be able to communicate in all forms of correspondence folders and related to projects associated with; will create transmittals, send follow up emails after coordination meetings, etc.; all related communication needs to be electronically documented in project folders, and CC’ll to the Lead.
Project File Management – must have a working knowledge of our file structure and be able to keep all file folders current and organized; must understand where various files need to be put so all personnel have them readily and easily available.
Program Proficiency – must learn the basics of AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
Code Knowledge – will acquire a basic knowledge of all codes pertinent to custom engineering, particularly the ASCE-7, IBC, UFC and how they govern seismic engineering.
Organization – must be able to keep a clean and organized work environment.
Performs Other Duties as Assigned – the employee might be asked to perform duties not listed in this job description but which are also considered to be essential to the employment position.
General – responsible for the maintenance and safekeeping of the devices, computers, and equipment in the department. Responsible for reporting any suspicious activity.
LEARNING & GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
3D Modeling and Coordination – must have a working knowledge of 3D modeling and how to create custom parts that meet your details for coordination; must understand how to do basic modeling of standard ISAT products and how to use Navis and/or Revit to coordinate location and fixes based on field conditions.
Custom Engineering – must be capable of creating custom engineering packages ISAT works on in a very efficient manner; will begin to have a more in depth working knowledge of floor mounted equipment with vibration isolation, and complex frames; must identify and provide solutions for “grey areas” within the code.
Submittal Response – must be able to craft appropriate (professional) documents/correspondence in response to SEOR/DSE comments to include revisions of drawings to meet the demands of the project design team.
Scheduling – must have a working knowledge of time frames in relation to all technical aspects of basic engineering tasks and be able to gauge them for scheduling of resources, both internally and externally; must be able to balance schedules of multiple tasks and cross check with the Engineering Group and entire branch PM staff on workloads.
Project Scope Control and Capturing Changes – be able to understand what a typical package requires and be able to identify when the engineering is outside the assigned task; must be able to identify these items to the custom engineering lead, the salesman, and the PM.
FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate must pass a background check.
