Brief Job Description The Systems Administrator V performs advanced computer systems administration work as a Microsoft Windows/RedHat Linux Administrator for the State of Texas HHSC TIERS operational infrastructure department. The role coordinates the planning, architecture, and engineering of the TIERS systems infrastructure. This includes implementation and configuration of hardware and software components to meet the needs of the organization and monitoring performance. Collaborates with TIERS Operations and Application Teams to ensure infrastructure is effectively deployed to support the TIERS System. Provides Windows Server 2016+ and Linux 8+ system administration for servers in a 24x7 high‑availability environment. Administers security controls and system hardening including remediation activities, and supports system and security audits by providing validation and evidence that controls are properly implemented.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Coordinate planning, architecture, and engineering of TIERS systems infrastructure, including implementation, development, testing, and configuration of hardware and software components. (25%)
Provide Windows Server 2016+ and Linux 8+ system administration, network and storage administration, and configuration/upgrade support for applications such as LDAP, Windows Active Directory, DNS, Microsoft SQL, Hyper‑V, VMware, etc. (25%)
Provide 24/7 on‑call server and application support, monitor performance, and coordinate resolution of high‑priority incidents. (20%)
Plan and coordinate server maintenance activities, including security patching, schedule maintenance windows, and document outcomes for compliance tracking. (10%)
Administer security controls and hardening, respond to audits, and assist agency in maintaining security tools. (10%)
Analyze and troubleshoot system problems, perform root cause analysis, recommend improvements, and document findings. (5%)
Open and respond to incidents and change requests in the TIERS Operations ticketing system, prioritize workload, and ensure documentation. (5%)
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of network facilities, data processing, computer hardware and software, network operations, security software, and performance monitoring tools.
Skills in hypervisors: Hyper‑V, VMware, Nutanix AHV, and RedHat OpenShift.
Experience with Dell VxRail, network administration, Microsoft SQL Server, IT governance, and security/privacy policies and tools.
Knowledge of supporting systems: Globalscape SFTP, IBM WebSphere, Adobe Experience Manager, Kofax, etc.
Ability to direct, organize, analyze problems, recommend solutions, and prepare concise written reports.
Ability to develop automation using Ansible or similar tools.
Skills in Helix (Remedy) and/or ServiceNow.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements Or Certifications
ITIL Foundation (preferred)
Windows and Linux server certifications (preferred)
AWS or Azure cloud certifications (preferred)
Initial Screening Criteria Experience supporting Windows and Linux server operating systems in large data center environments.
Additional Information This position offers a hybrid work schedule consisting of three (3) days of telework and two (2) days in the office each week. Candidates must reside in Austin, Texas, or a surrounding city and be able to report to the office on all scheduled in‑office workdays.
