Summary/Objective: Five Stones Research Corporation (5SRC) is seeking energetic candidates to join our established and growing Huntsville‑headquartered team. THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD.
Position Summary The Senior Network Engineer supports the Department of Defense (DoD) by ensuring secure, reliable, and high performance LAN/WLAN/WAN operations across Military Treatment Facilities. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead network initiatives in a mission critical environment.
Essential Functions
Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex LAN/WLAN/WAN network issues across all levels of the OSI model using enterprise network management tools such as Orion SolarWinds, ARMIS, and Ansible.
Perform high-level installation, configuration, documentation, and management of communication equipment supporting all network facilities.
Measure and optimize network performance through understanding of Management Information Blocks (MIB), MRTG, and other monitoring methodologies to ensure minimal downtime and high service availability.
Serve as the regional point of contact for network issues, configuration management, addressing, and multi-protocol routing.
Ensure network designs and operations fully support mission requirements.
Maintain and enhance network security controls to protect MTF systems from unauthorized access.
Develop, implement, and update network standards, procedures, and best practices.
Provide written recommendations and coordinate updates with the Network Standards Team.
Evaluate vendor technologies to determine optimal solutions for DoD and regional needs.
Communicate effectively with government officials, medical personnel, and technical staff.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering, a technical degree or related discipline, and five years of directly related experience; or successful completion of a certified Technical or Vocational School and 10 years of directly related experience gained through progressively higher levels of complexity.
Information Assurance Manager (IAM) Level III or equivalent certification, per DoD 8570.01-M.
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certifications are required.
Mastery of core networking protocols and technologies: TCP/IP, XDM, HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, RSTP, VRRP, BIND, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, PPP, HDLC, V.35, RS-449, and extensive knowledge of various IEEE standards (802.1d, 802.1q, 802.1w, 802.3, 802.5, 802.10, 802.11, 802.3u, 802.3z, 803.2).
Clear understanding and direct experience with synchronous and asynchronous communications, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, and other DoD and DHA communication media.
Experience with OTDR, cable testers, network sniffers and EIA/TIA cable standards.
Expertise in routed, switched and shared LAN environments that include Microsoft OS, Windows Active Directory, UNIX and OpenVMS, and use of routers, switches, terminal servers, and WAN connectivity.
Experience with DoD Health Care Information Systems.
Expertise in Windows networks, Cisco Systems, and Orion SolarWinds.
Capability to establish and configure network firewalls, VPN devices, and IDSs.
