Cleveland Clinic Gastroenterologists use the latest endoscopic advances to perform tens of thousands of minimally invasive procedures each year. GI (Endoscopy) Technicians work under the direction of a licensed nurse and/or physician to perform various patient care activities and related services, such as cleaning and disinfection, clerical duties, patient education and care, communication and supply procurement. You will interact with patients during three phases, pre-procedure, during procedures and post-procedure, allowing you to be essential in ensuring patient safety. A caregiver in this position works varying days and hours between 8:00AM – 6:30PM. A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Assist in assessment and identification of physical, psychosocial, educational and safety needs of the patient, obtain vital signs, and notify Registered Nurses of any pertinent findings. Perform rounds on patients in the prep/observation area to meet patient needs and enhance the patient experience and communicate when necessary. Assist physicians and/or nurses during procedures and tests within scope of competency. Maintain a clean and safe environment by cleaning and defrosting refrigerators, removing dirty linen appropriately, cleaning and preparing patient carts, and cleaning and processing endoscopy instruments and equipment per policy maintaining PPE. Maintain quality control within the department. Tear down procedure rooms at the end of the day and prepare rooms for the next day cases, including restocking supplies. Transport patients utilizing safe techniques. Assist with equipment management within the department as well as all cases outside of the department by troubleshooting and following up on all equipment issues and requesting assistance when needed. Maintain inventories and communicate to appropriate personnel of needs. Utilize software applications as appropriate. Assist with breath tests in GI Special Testing Lab. Receive patients at reception area and facilitate throughput. Prepare charts, track patients in Op Time, and communicate to RNs all special patient needs. Assist in scheduling procedures and assist with functions at the control desk when necessary.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED Medical Assistant certification OR one year of hospital experience utilizing medical terminology and computers Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of clinical experience and/or experience in a Gastroenterology Lab or Operating Room Medical Assistant certification Certification from the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc Experience using EPIC Medical Assistant or PCNA experience
Physical Requirements:
Requirements for this position include; standing in one area up to eight hours, wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment); sitting in a confined area for eight hours using a computer screen and the ability to perform small repetitive motor tasks (e.g., typing, filing, responding to telephone, application of abdominal pressure) are necessary. This job also requires that an individual be able to work under periods of high stress.
