Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs and identifies urgent or emergent care priorities. The ED RN collaboratively provides direct care, applies appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. The ED RN utilizes relationship-based care principles to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain or discomfort and safety. The ED RN assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients accordingly. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and documents any major deviations from the norm within acceptable time frames. The ED RN correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions required using direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data. The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. The ED RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The ED RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN safeguards public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The ED RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The ED RN teaches patients what is needed for continued care at home and assesses patient/family learning styles to maximize understanding. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, focusing care on their needs. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice.
