Salary: $19.97 - $23.27 Hourly Location : Waco, TX, TX Job Type: Full-Time Department: JAIL MEDICAL Opening Date: 06/02/2026 Closing Date: 9/2/2026 5:00 PM Central FLSA: Non-Exempt Position Summary Under the direction of a supervisor, performs clinical and clerical work of a repetitive and routine nature requiring accurate typing and knowledge of Sheriff's Office policies and procedures. Certified Medical Assistant will be performing a variety of general and advanced clerical tasks including maintenance of file systems, logs, and records and compiling information to assist in the efficient accomplishment of support activities. Primary clinical role will be administration of medication, to maintain medication storage area and reorder, stock and transcribe medication orders.
Essential FunctionsAdministration of medication as assigned by their supervisor Administers prescribed medication to inmates and maintain related medical records under the supervision of the Director of Nurses
Administer medications via the following routes: oral, topical, eye, ear, and nose, rectal, transdermal, sublingual, buccal, and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections
Verify identity of inmate receiving medication and ensure documentation of drug, dosage, route, and time of administration in EMR.
Presents medication to inmate and observes ingestion or other application, or administers medication using specified procedures
Obtains vital signs and/or observes inmates to detect response to specified types of medication and prepares a report or notifies designated personnel of unexpected reactions
Provides documentation reasons a prescribed drug was not administered
Monitor and document in EMR temperature, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure and pulse oximetry as directed. Significant changes will be reported to a nurse immediately.
Clarifies any order or treatment regimen believed to be inaccurate, ineffective, or contraindicated by consulting with the appropriate licensed practitioner. Notifies supervisor when making the decision to administer
Ensures all pharmacy carts remain clean, stocked, and orderly
Adheres to all facility policies and procedures, Pharmacy Board rules, and regulations regarding the administration of documentation of narcotic medications.
Perform other clerical duties such as photocopying; ordering and issuing supplies; and sending, receiving, sorting, and distributing mail Answer telephone calls in a courteous and efficient manner, route incoming calls to appropriate persons or offices, or takes messages Performs procedures such as vital signs, dressing changes, blood glucose monitoring, venipuncture for laboratory specimen collection and clinical documentation. Assist physician in exam room.
Keep exam rooms stocked, maintain medication storage area and maintain instruments, medical equipment and supplies. Calls/faxes/emails orders for medication and medical supplies; receives shipments from the pharmaceutical and/or supply companies; conducts inventory of all items ordered/received to assure accuracy of the order Returns discontinued medications to pharmaceutical companies as needed to receive credits on accounts in a timely manner Assures product received from the pharmacy or other vendor is packaged and labeled appropriately prior to delivering stock to medication areas Regular attendance and timeliness are required

Minimum Requirements EDUCATION:Required:
High School diploma or GED Graduated from an approved medical assistant training program and valid Texas Medical Assistant Certification
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE:Required:
Must maintain personal loyalty to the Sheriff General knowledge of basic hardware/software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Work, Excel, Outlook General skill in operating standard office equipment such as personal computers, calculators, and telephones Possess a thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality Ability to accurately sort, file, and retrieve material using alphabetical, numerical, or chronological systems Keen attention to detail; careful and accurate data entry DISCLAIMER: McLennan County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past seven years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records, and educational attainment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak clearly and hear clearly The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms; stoop and kneel Must be able to safely lift 20 lbs. Although directed not to engage in physical contact with inmates, individual must be able to physically avoid combative or aggressive inmates and may occasionally become involuntarily engaged with combative inmates HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, evenings and nights. Must be able to work 12-hour shifts.
