Assist the Optometrist:
Prepare Patients for Vision Examinations: Ensure patients are comfortable and informed about the examination process. Accurately record patient medical history, chief complaint, and reconcile current medications. Perform preliminary tests including visual acuity, pupil assessment, confrontation fields, EOMs, IOPs, and other testing as determined by the Optometrist. Administer Eye Drops: Instill eye drops using sterile techniques and provide patient education on the purpose and effects of the drops as ordered by the Optometrist. Scribe During Examinations: Accurately document the Optometrist's findings and instructions during patient examinations to ensure comprehensive patient records. Assist with Specialized Tests: Administer specialized tests and procedures under the supervision of the Optometrist, including visual field assessments, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography. Patient Education: Educate patients on eye care practices, the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses, and post-examination care instructions. Follow-Up Care: Assist with follow-up care by scheduling appointments, obtaining referrals, and providing patients with necessary information regarding their treatment plans. Insurance and Referrals: Obtain prior authorizations from insurance companies, assist patients in understanding their insurance coverage, and manage referrals to other healthcare providers as needed.
Optical Duties:
Assist patients with frame and lens selection. Advise patients on best choices for their prescription and lifestyle. Accurately measure pupillary distance and segment height for glasses orders Calculate patient out of pocket cost for eyewear
Administrative Duties:
Answer phones, schedule appointments, and maintain patient records. Document patient care information and history in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Address assigned tasks within the EHR and document care during computer downtime.
Clinical Support:
Maintain inventory and ensure equipment is clean and functional. Perform routine checks on equipment and emergency kits. Clean and prepare examination rooms between patient visits.
Mobile Optometry Outreach Program:
Travel to outreach sites and set up mobile clinics. Perform clerical tasks and maintain accurate health records. Escort children and interact professionally with school staff. Facilitate care delivery with parents regarding referrals and follow-ups.
Training and Compliance:
Assist with orientation and training of new staff. Maintain appropriate certification/licensure and complete required competencies. Follow HIPAA laws and organizational safety policies.
Customer Service:
Communicate professionally with patients, staff, and vendors. Promote teamwork and adapt to changes. Model a positive attitude and respect towards all individuals.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Formal training or equivalent experience in aspects of the profession (approximately one or two "semester-length" post-high school classes or certificate/technical programs lasting up to one year). Strong understanding of and experience in applying techniques and practices of the field. Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency with EHR systems and basic computer skills. Willingness to travel
