Position Summary: A Cardiac Sonographer is a specialized diagnostic medical imaging professional who performs echocardiographic ultrasound examinations to assist physicians in diagnosing and managing diseases of the heart. Cardiac sonographers work closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to obtain high-quality cardiac images and data while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and clinical accuracy.
Key Responsibilities:
Diagnostic Testing & Imaging:
Perform non-invasive echocardiographic examinations, including:
Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) Stress echocardiograms Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) (assisting physician as required) Acquire and optimize cardiac ultrasound images to assess:
Cardiac structure and function Heart valves Blood flow and hemodynamics Ejection fraction and wall motion Recognize abnormal findings and ensure appropriate image documentation for physician interpretation.
Patient Care & Support:
Prepare patients for echocardiographic procedures by explaining exams and addressing concerns. Properly position patients to obtain diagnostic-quality images. Monitor patient condition during exams and respond appropriately to changes in status or emergencies. Maintain patient dignity, comfort, and confidentiality at all times.
Assisting with Cardiac Procedures:
Assist cardiologists during TEE procedures and stress echocardiography. Monitor patients during pharmacologic or exercise stress testing in collaboration with nursing and physician staff. Follow established safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
Data Interpretation & Reporting:
Perform preliminary measurements and calculations in accordance with lab protocols. Accurately document exam findings, measurements, and technical impressions. Ensure timely completion of reports within the electronic medical record or imaging system.
Equipment Maintenance & Quality Assurance:
Operate and maintain echocardiography ultrasound equipment. Perform routine quality control, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting. Adhere to lab accreditation standards (e.g., IAC Echocardiography).
Patient Education:
Provide patients with clear instructions before, during, and after echocardiographic procedures. Answer patient questions within scope of practice.
Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with cardiologists, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental meetings as required.
Education & Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in:
Diagnostic Medical Sonography Cardiovascular Sonography Or a related allied health field Graduation from an accredited sonography program preferred. Certifications:
Required or Preferred Certifications (varies by employer/state):
RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS) RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI) Additional specialty credentials (e.g., Fetal Echo) may be preferred depending on role.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology Proficiency in echocardiography imaging techniques and protocols Ability to recognize urgent or critical findings Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Strong attention to detail and time management Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
