Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Reports To: Supervising Speech-Language Pathologist, Principal, Special Education Director

Wage/Hour Status: Non exempt

Length of Contract: 190 Days

Hours: 7:50 am - 3:50 pm

Salary: $46,000 - $50,900

Primary Purpose: A speech-language pathology assistant (SLP-Assistant) is an individual who, following academic and on-the-job training, performs tasks as prescribed, directed, and supervised indirectly and/or directly by master's level speech-language pathologists certificated/licensed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) or licensed by the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (ABESPA).

Qualifications: As set by federal and state laws and regulations governing the provisions of special education and related services to children with disabilities.

Education/Certification/Registrations:

  • Bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university
  • Yearly registration through Arkansas Board of Examiner in Speech Pathology and Audiology (ABESPA) for Medicaid billing

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Providing quality speech-language therapy to students with disabilities individually or in groups under supervision from supervising speech-language pathologist
  • Accurately collecting data from therapy sessions
  • Confidentiality of all information concerning students with disabilities
  • Technology

Ability to:

  • Assist speech-language pathologist with therapies
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form
  • React with flexibility to unexpected schedule changes and sensitivity to changing situations and student needs
  • Maintain cooperative work relationships
  • Follow all rules of confidentiality when working with and accessing student information
  • Organize and maintain accurate records that are easily accessed when requested by the public or state agency
  • Effectively use technology

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Provide routine maintenance/generalization tasks as prescribed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
  2. Follow IEPs, therapy schedules, and therapy protocols developed by the supervising speech-language pathologist
  3. Document student progress toward meeting established goals and/or objectives as stated in the student's individualized education program, and report this information to the supervising speech-language pathologist.
  4. Assist speech-language pathologist during assessment of students, such as those judged to be difficult to test.
  5. Assist with informal documentation (e.g., tallying notes for the speech-language pathologist to use), prepare materials, and assist with other clerical duties as directed by the supervising speech-language pathologist.
  6. Assist SLP in performing checks and maintenance of assistive technology equipment.
  7. Participate with the speech-language pathologist in professional development trainings
  8. Assist the speech-language pathologist with getting students to/from therapy sessions.
  9. Assist in the creation of therapy materials and/or classroom visual schedules/materials for student with disabilities
  1. Any other duties as assigned by the supervising speech-language pathologist
