General Description:

The Veterans' Home of Wyoming (VHW) is now offering an excellent opportunity for compassionate individuals to serve our veterans and begin a career as a health care professional. This position is specifically intended for job advancement to a Certified Nurse Aide position at the new cottages on the VHW campus. This position requires a caring and compassionate person to assist in the preparation and service of meals and snacks to people who live at the cottages. This position will also assist in keeping the living and sleeping areas clean, as well as providing laundry services. Within the first year of employment, this person will commit to completing and passing both a Certified Nurse Aide class and the State certification exam for a Certified Nurse Aide. The VHW will pay for all CNA class and certification exam expenses. (Conditions apply. See Notes below.)

Essential Functions: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Prepare, cook, and serve all meals and snacks
  • Work with the Dietary Manager to plan meals and coordinate food orders
  • Follows regulations related to safe food handling and sanitizing kitchen and food prep areas
  • Performs housekeeping and laundry services
  • Identifying, reporting, and meeting with clinical support team members to correct any issues
  • Assists with answering call lights by performing duties within their scope of practice or notifying the appropriate team member of the Veterans' needs

Preferences/Agency Requirements:

**Must be able to obtain a Nurse Aide Certification within the first 12 months of employment

Knowledge:

  • Ability to attend and pass a CNA course and State CNA examination within 12 months of hire
  • Ability to successfully pass the food handling course
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Time management and organization skills
  • Knowledge of cottage policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Experience Substitution: 1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Human Services)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be able to obtain CNA Certification within 12 months of hire OR Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Healthcare)

Experience: No prior experience required

Physical Working Conditions:

  • Lift medical/patient equipment of varying sizes and weights up to about 50 lbs.
  • Work evenings, nights, and/or weekends as scheduled.
  • Must be able to work with different types of food and spices (ie meat, dairy, cinnamon, pepper)

Notes:

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • A background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for every successful applicant.
  • For our residents' health and protection, annual influenza vaccination is required, and annual testing for tuberculosis.
  • Employees of this facility will be expected to follow all rules and requirements established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding COVID-19.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be conducted on safety-sensitive positions (direct patient care positions are considered safety-sensitive). Drug and alcohol testing will be conducted in any position if reasonable suspicion exists.

  • All expenses for the CNA class and one certification exam will be paid for by the Veterans' Home of Wyoming (VHW). Voluntary separation of employment from the VHW within the first year after the date of the CNA certification exam will require the employee to reimburse all expenses to the VHW.

  • Hiring Bonus eligibility and conditions:
    • New state employees and temporary employees accepting a permanent position
    • Current state employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been open to the public
    • One year of service in the position must be completed. Failure to complete this requirement will require reimbursement of the bonus with the funds deducted from the final pay.
    • Internal candidates will be required to remain in the position for a minimum of (1) year from the promotion date.
    • Employees will only be eligible for (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
