They serve as the escalation point for daily accounting operations across multiple clients, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and clarity in financial reporting and analysis. In this client-facing role, the Controller provides proactive communication, actionable recommendations, and consistent, high-quality service delivery.
These professionals combine technical expertise with strong client relationship management and a focus on continuous improvement. They partner closely with Accounting Managers and Staff Accountants to deliver seamless, scalable, and reliable accounting solutions that support each client’s business objectives.
Duties and responsibilities
As a BELAY Team member, you will professionally represent the company in all virtual and in-person interactions. You are expected to exemplify our mission, vision, and core values daily, fostering a collaborative and positive team environment.
Client Service & Relationship Management
Serve as the first point of escalation for day-to-day client inquiries and accounting issues
Deliver accurate, timely, and actionable financial reporting that helps clients understand performance and key metrics
Identify accounting or process challenges, recommend data-driven solutions, and communicate changes clearly to clients and internal stakeholders
Support Staff Accountants in daily operations and professional development through guidance and feedback
Collaborate with the Accounting Manager to maintain client satisfaction, ensure engagement scope alignment, and manage profitability
Partner across departments to create a seamless client experience and connect clients with additional BELAY resources as needed
Accounting Operations Execute and oversee core accounting functions including
Month-end revenue entries and clearing account reconciliations
Month-end reconciliations and journal entries for inventory and cost of goods sold
Maintenance of prepaid, accrued, and deferred revenue schedules
Financial statement preparation and variance analysis
Accounts payable and receivable support
Payroll processing and reporting support
Cash flow management support
Sales tax and 1099 filings as applicable
Analyze the full financial picture including gross profit margin and key performance indicators
Maintain organized, accurate financial records in QuickBooks Online and other client systems
Review work prepared by Staff Accountants, ensuring accuracy and providing coaching as needed
Identify and implement opportunities to improve workflow efficiency or automate recurring processes
Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and client-specific policies
Support Accounting Managers in mentoring and developing Staff Accountants through knowledge sharing and coaching
Contribute to process documentation, standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives
Assist with special projects, client onboarding, and internal transitions as assigned
Demonstrate accountability, adaptability, and professional maturity in all interactions
Qualifications This role requires a motivated and trustworthy self-starter with strong communication and technological skills who thrives both independently and as part of a team. Our ideal Controller is proactive, analytical, and client-focused, with the confidence to lead financial discussions and the humility to keep learning and improving.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
4-8 years of accounting experience, preferably in client-service or outsourced accounting environments
Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, and month-end close processes
Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and related applications (e.g., BiLL, Gusto, Shopify, Rippling, & Xenett)
Excellent communication skills and client service orientation
Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines in a remote environment
High attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
