The purpose of the SAGE Fund is to create breakthroughs in human rights accountability for economic actors by spurring innovation in approaches and building greater field capacity in the human rights movement (particularly in the Global South) to address critical gaps in protection created by the global economy. Economic globalization has exposed gaps in accountability, where the protection of the international human rights system has not kept pace with the scope of the global economy and the harms caused by powerful economic actors within it. The Fund serves as an incubator for cultivating new approaches and as a donor vehicle for addressing these gaps in a more coordinated and strategic way through:
Seeding innovation in tools and approaches used to hold all economic actors (particularly nonstate actors) accountable for human rights violations;
Building knowledge, skills and capacity, particularly in the Global South, to analyze key challenges, fashion strategies in response and mobilize new coalitions and constituencies;
Provide thought leadership and create greater leverage in the donor and NGO communities by building a common agenda and identifying opportunities for impact.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The SAGE Fund seeks to build a team of 2-3 consultants to support the new “Resilient Women and Natural Resources Initiative” aimed at addressing the ways that natural resource extraction creates and reinforces structural violence, including gender-based violence, and amplifying the strategies women are using in response. Over the next two and a half years, the initiative will create a deeper understanding of linkages across movements working at the intersections of environmental/climate justice, natural resources and extraction, indigenous peoples, human rights, corporate accountability, and gender justice. This project is supported by the Ford Foundation through a new timebound initiative that seeks to boost the impact, resilience and collective response of women and women-led movements to natural resource extraction and the structural violence that it both engenders and exacerbates. The consultants’ primary responsibility will be to conduct a landscape analysis within their field of expertise (natural resource extraction, human rights, corporate accountability, indigenous rights, land and territorial defense, economic rights, global economy, environmental justice, or climate justice).
