Overview Headwaters Science Institute is seeking a motivated, detail‑oriented person to join our team. We need someone who is excited about non‑profit work and can help with teaching students fieldwork, database management, invoicing, basic marketing and communications tasks, customer service, and general program assistance.
The ideal candidate enjoys a variety of tasks, is proactive, highly organized, able to work independently, curious, connected to our mission of fostering curiosity through science, and easily connects with teachers and colleagues.
Essential Job Duties
Potential first point of contact for teachers, parents, and donors
Provide them with excellent support and customer care
Point them to the right program or person to talk to
Teacher communications
Communications
Help prepare media and send accurate and engaging parent and teacher communications (e.g., e-newsletters, campaign materials)
Printed materials including flyers
Social media
Organizational messaging
Teach, mentor, and organize school and camp programs
Program Marketing
Research new schools/school districts for prospective programs
americ Set up meetings for the program coordinator
Help with fundraising الثانية and outreach events
Planning and logistics
On‑site support and execution
Support online events
Upkeep of the database
Accurate inputting of teachers, parents, donors
Database culling
Administer data inputting, amendments, running reports, and creating data queries as necessary
Qualifications and Experience
A passion for science and education
Organized
Achievement‑oriented — enjoys taking on challenges
Experience teaching science classes or working at camp (formal or informal education is ok)
Background or experience with scientific research and fieldwork is a plus
Bachelors & 1‑2 yrs experience or Associates & 3‑4 yrs experience
Wilderness First kaikship (8 hrs+) certification or more
Strong Customer Service skills: People‑oriented — enjoys interacting with people
Enthusiasm and drive for marketing for a great cause is essential; experience is desirable but not essential
Great written and verbal communication skills
Basic graphic design and video editing skills
Aptitude for working with databases, ideally in a customer care environment
Strong attention to detail and focus on accuracy
Comfortable using many types of technology and a willingness to learn new software as needed
Energetic, can‑do approach to work
Good problem‑solving skills at a practical level
Engaging personal skills, both written and verbal, to support marketing and customer care with schools and parents
Flexible and adaptable with changing task prioritization
Distributing mailed and electronic fundraising appeals and marketing info to engage teachers, and program parents
Self‑motivated and disciplined to regularly set and achieve work goals
Enjoy connecting with people electronically, over the phone, and in person.

Part Time Science Mentors and Camp Educators (Tahoe Area) Headwaters Science Institute is hiring science mentors and educators for the 2024-2025 school year. These instructors will be working with a variety of age groups (5-13 years old). Our programs are located at different field sites around Lake Tahoe.
Lead Mentor Job Description ($20-24/hr depending on experience) Each day instructors will work with a cohort of ~10 students. Throughout the week they will help their group through the scientific process: create a testable research question, create a hypothesis, create a methods plan, collect data, and analyze and discuss data and results. Supplemental activities including group games and art projects. Lead mentors should feel comfortable instructing assistant mentors, guiding groups of students, and working with.Observable outdoors, as our camps occur fully outside. Rather than a wealth of knowledge around the specific project topic area, the most important attribute we are looking for is comfort buildingಯ್ಯ and executing scientific research projects as well as the ability to help students do the same.
Lead Mentor Qualifications
A background in science is required: minimum associates degree or comparable undergraduate coursework, bachelors preferred

Experience working with youth: formal or informal teaching/outreach, previous summer camp experience is a plus
CPR certified and basic first aid training required

Assistant Mentor Job Description ($17-19/hr depending on experience) The assistant mentors will collaborate with the lead mentors to facilitate the students’ self‑driven mini research projects and provide support with behavior management. Additionally, the assistant instructors will distribute materials and assist with game instruction and participation.
Assistant Mentor Qualifications
A background in science is preferred: undergraduate coursework
Experience working with youth is preferred
