Metallurgical Technician
Reporting to the Chief Metallurgist, the Metallurgical Technician provides support to Mill Operations by gathering, organizing and analyzing metallurgical information and conducting tests and research to optimize production, ensure the safe, efficient and cost-effective operation and drive continuous process improvements. They are responsible for the preparation of Mill reports as well as updating of metallurgical databases and spreadsheets. They also perform refinery duties and assist Mill Operations activities when necessary.
The list of duties and responsibilities below is not exclusive or exhaustive, and the employee will be required to undertake such duties as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the position. All employees are required to be professional, cooperative, and flexible in line with the requirements of the position.
Operational / Technical Execution
- Prepare and conduct metallurgical and quality control tests then prepare written reports.
- Collect and record metallurgical data in an accurate and timely manner.
- Conduct sampling, circuit checks and end-of-month inventories.
- Perform analysis of metallurgical and process data as required.
- Assist in the preparation and shipment of carbon fines.
- Prepare mill reports.
- Conduct or assist in the end of month mill reconciliation & accounting.
- Troubleshoot issues related to process and metallurgy.
- Conduct research activities to improve Mill performance.
- Recommend, initiate and/or carry out improvements to mill processes, metallurgical tests, spreadsheets and analytical tools.
- Identify safety and environmental hazards in the workplace and work address them in a timely manner.
- Follow and promote all of McEwen Mining's health and safety rules, regulations, and policies.
- Perform refinery duties and assist Mill Operations activities when necessary.
General Administration and Controls
- Provide technical direction for front line production supervisors and aid engineering students as needed.
- Upkeep and complete necessary metallurgical files.
- Monitor reagents and process/metallurgy supplies and ensure efficient consumption, timely delivery and accurate monthly inventory.
- Coordinate with vendors, consultants, contractors and auditors.
- Participate in daily compliance meetings, weekly safety meetings, and other staff meetings as required.
- Prepare work and purchase requests as needed.
- Maintain good housekeeping of the Metallurgical office, laboratory and storage container.
Qualifications and Skills Requirement
- Must be authorized to work in Canada.
- Ability to work safely, efficiently, and always maintain a safety conscious mentality within the Mill environment.
- Highly motivated to learn/train and become part of the McEwen Mill team supporting all the milling processes with professionalism.
- Possess a desire to learn and apply their skills in the milling environment in order to maintain and operate all relevant equipment in the metallurgical laboratory and throughout the mill.
- Superior verbal and written communication abilities, facilitating effective dialogue with team members.
- Ability to interact with a wide variety of departments/roles.
- Ability to maintain attention to detail in a fast moving and demanding environment.
- Solid analytical capabilities coupled with good problem-solving skills.
- Able to work in a flexible production environment while possessing strong team coaching skills.
- At times, able to work overtime or in the evening and weekends.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- At minimum, a bachelor's degree in Chemical, Environmental, Metallurgical, Mineral Processing, relevant to mining.
- Proficient in Excel and other MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Experience with computers, peripheral equipment, and information systems
- Previous experience with metallurgical/mineral processing lab test equipment is an asset.
- Valid driver's license and a reliable means of transportation.
- Milling or Metallurgical experience is an asset.
