About the Role:
We are seeking a Senior System Security Specialist with deep expertise in defining security requirements and developing solutions for Multilevel Security (MLS) environments. This role focuses on analyzing MLS challenges, evaluating the capabilities of approved security products, and ensuring that high-level applications meet strict security requirements. The specialist will play a critical role in shaping security architectures, validating technical approaches, and designing solutions that protect systems operating across multiple classification or sensitivity levels.
Location: Periodic onsite work at various locations throughout the State of Maryland.
Key Responsibilities:- Analyze and define security requirements for Multilevel Security (MLS) architectures and applications.
- Evaluate approved security products and determine their applicability, strengths, and limitations in MLS environments.
- Develop technical solutions that address MLS challenges, including data separation, access control, labeling, policy enforcement, and system interoperability.
- Recommend enhancements to systems, architectures, or configurations based on MLS requirements and risk considerations.
- Review designs, requirements, and technical documentation to ensure alignment with MLS constraints and mission needs.
- Collaborate with engineering, security, and program teams to guide the secure development of high-level applications.
- Provide expert insights on MLS policies, system behaviors, and technical safeguards.
- Produce clear documentation, reports, and recommendations that support certification, accreditation, or audit activities.
- Support troubleshooting and problem resolution related to MLS constraints or system behavior.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Security, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline; or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of MLS concepts, including data classification, labeling, access control models, and trusted computing bases.
- Experience analyzing system architectures and identifying MLS-related risks and constraints.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to produce clear and accurate technical documentation.
- Proven ability to work across technical teams to solve complex security challenges.
- 5+ years of specialized experience in:
- Defining computer security requirements for high-level or mission-critical applications
- Evaluating approved security products for MLS applicability
- Developing solutions to complex MLS problems
- Experience supporting MLS environments in federal, defense, or classified settings.
- Knowledge of trusted operating systems, cross-domain solutions, or high-assurance architectures.
- Familiarity with security frameworks and guidance such as NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP RMF), NSA or CNSS policies
- Professional certifications such as:
- ISSP
- ISSEP
- GSLC
- GSEC
