POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Radiology (Working Director) provides administrative leadership and direct clinical care within the Diagnostic Imaging Department of a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This position is responsible for maintaining essential imaging services while optimizing resources, exhibiting a high degree of independence, cross-modality competency, and operational flexibility. The Director routinely performs imaging procedures while overseeing department operations, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and staff support. This role ensures safe, timely, and high-quality diagnostic imaging services to meet the needs of a rural patient population. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform diagnostic imaging procedures across available modalities, prioritizing patient safety and image quality. Ensure routine coverage for scheduled, unscheduled, and on-call imaging services. Serve as a primary resource for staff, assisting with complex exams and real-time problem-solving. Maintain competency across modalities to ensure continuity of services in a low-volume, high-variability environment. Direct daily operations with a focus on efficiency, flexibility, and continuity of care. Balance patient care demands, staffing limitations, and available resources. Ensure compliance with all CAH regulations to ensure readiness for surveys, audits, and inspections. Oversee and document quality control activities for all imaging equipment. Ensure adherence to radiation safety standards and ALARA principles. Assist with budgeting, capital planning, and equipment lifecycle management. Train, orient, and evaluate staff with an emphasis on cross-training and multi-modality competency. Ensure staff maintain required certifications, licensure, and continuing education. Serve as the primary liaison between the department, radiologists (onsite or teleradiology), providers, and hospital leadership. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The Director of Radiology (Working Director) shall:
Graduate from an AMA-approved Radiologic Technology or Diagnostic Imaging program, or equivalent/comparable program. Hold current certification through: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (preferred) Additional modality certifications preferred (CT, MRI, US, Mammo, or NM)
Maintain a current Wyoming Diagnostic Imaging License (if required). Have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in diagnostic imaging; rural or critical access experience preferred. Demonstrate competency in multiple imaging modalities (strongly preferred). Have prior leadership or lead technologist experience (preferred). Demonstrate ability to function independently with strong clinical, operational, and decision-making skills. Maintain proficiency in: Health Information System, Radiology Information System, PACS systems (e.g., Cerner) Basic computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, reporting tools)
WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:
This is preferably a working director role, with a portion of time spent performing clinical imaging duties. Must be able to adapt and support staffing levels, fluctuating volumes, and broad responsibilities typical of a Critical Access Hospital. Requires independent decision-making QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to modify care based on the developmental / functional age of the patient as well as that of the patient's ethnic background. Must be able to provide care according to the developmental level and or chronological patient served. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying the needs and abilities of each patient, and demonstrating an understanding of how a patient's chronological and developmental age influences his/her need for adaptations related to his/her abilities. Also, an understanding of how a patient's age impacts his/her ability to deal with and adapt to the care needed/provided is required. General census of neonatal to geriatric patients.
