À propos

*Purpose of this role*
The Product Design Lead will help shape and improve the experience of learners, customers and colleagues using our website and learning management system.
Our bespoke platform, EQUAL, supports online learning and skills training for thousands of learners and the organisations that work with them. This role will help make that experience clearer, more accessible, more consistent and easier to use.
The Product Design Lead will be the design authority for the website and LMS. They will create polished Figma designs, define and care for our design system, shape interaction patterns, support clear requirements, and guide colleagues toward thoughtful, user-centred decisions. They will lead on product design standards, user experience, design quality and requirements clarity for two important digital platforms.
This is not a line management role. The Product Design Lead will report to the CTO and work as a senior peer to Engineering and Data & Analytics, with direct access to senior stakeholders and the executive team where product experience decisions need wider alignment.
An early focus will be improving learner onboarding in the LMS, helping learners understand where to start, what to do next and how to begin their course with confidence. The Product Design Lead will balance longer-term product vision with practical improvements to the current experience, working carefully within real-world constraints while helping us move steadily toward a better overall product experience.
*Responsibilities*
* Create clear, accessible and polished Figma designs for the website and LMS, turning user needs and business priorities into practical product experiences
* Define, maintain and improve the design system, including UI components, interaction patterns, accessibility expectations, mobile usability and design handoff standards
* Act as the design authority for the website and LMS, protecting learner clarity, consistent navigation, design-system integrity and a simple, uncluttered experience
* Translate user needs, stakeholder input and business priorities into clear requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria that Engineering can work from confidently
* Work closely with Engineering to ensure agreed designs and standards are followed, reviewing delivered work before release where user experience, accessibility or consistency may be affected
* Gather insight from learners, college administrators, support teams, commercial colleagues and internal users, using feedback and data to guide product design decisions
* Work with BI and Data & Analytics to understand learner behaviour, especially around onboarding, course access and where learners may need clearer guidance
* Support senior stakeholders and the executive team with clear, evidence-informed recommendations, helping colleagues understand trade-offs and make thoughtful product decisions
*Success in the role*
After six months, success will mean that key LMS learner journeys, are visibly clearer; a coherent design system is in place and being followed; and Engineering colleagues are receiving clearer, more complete requirements before work begins.
The role will help The Skills Network make better product decisions by connecting learner needs, customer needs, design quality, accessibility, data insight and practical delivery considerations.
*Skills, Experience, and Personal Qualities*
*Essential:*
* Strong hands-on UX/UI design skills, with evidence of polished digital product design work
* Confident use of Figma, including components, variants, prototypes and design handoff

* Experience using data, product analytics, support tickets, survey feedback or similar evidence sources to guide decisions
* Good understanding of interaction design, user journeys, accessibility and responsive design
* Ability to turn user needs and business priorities into clear requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria
* Experience working closely with developers so that designs, requirements and acceptance criteria are well understood before build starts
* Good stakeholder communication skills, including the ability to explain design decisions, trade-offs and recommendations clearly
* A practical approach to improvement, with the ability to protect quality while making progress within existing constraints
* A genuine interest in education, skills training and the role technology can play in helping people learn
*Desirable:*
* Experience working with accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA
* Experience with any of the following tools: Jira, Confluence, Google Analytics and Hotjar
