Boom Supersonic's mission is to make the world dramatically more accessible through a renaissance in supersonic flight. Boom is developing the Symphony supersonic engine, which powers the Overture supersonic airliner and the Superpower natural gas turbine for AI. Overture will fly at twice the speed of today's subsonic jets over water and 50% faster over land with Boomless Cruise.
Engineer the software that drives high-velocity iteration in propulsion design.
At Boom, your closest collaborators aren't far-removed users-they're the propulsion engineers designing Symphony, the first purpose-built turbofan for supersonic flight. In this role, you'll learn how jet engines are actually designed and optimized, and you'll write the software that accelerates every part of that journey. The systems you build will tear down bottlenecks, automate the hardest parts of propulsion workflows, and turn massive simulations and physics models into rapid iteration. You'll be building the tools that let a small team move at an industry-defying pace-shaping how Symphony evolves from first concept to first fire. And when it all comes together, you'll realize your code helped make a new engine possible.
Role Overview
Learn how jet engines work-how they're modeled, analyzed, optimized, and matured into real hardware. Work day-to-day with propulsion and turbomachinery engineers to uncover workflow gaps and remove friction at every stage. Architect and automate performant end-to-end analysis pipelines that tie together simulation, optimization, test data, and design iteration. Build tools, APIs, and data systems that make high-fidelity engineering data instantly accessible, structured, and reliable. Develop custom simulation utilities and workflow orchestration when off-the-shelf tools fall short. Integrate legacy codes, commercial solvers, and internal tools into unified, stable processes. Prototype quickly, gather feedback directly from engineering teams, and evolve solutions into production-grade systems. Contribute to Boom's broader engine design software ecosystem, helping set technical direction and best practices. The Ideal Candidate
Expert-level Python; comfortable building robust services, pipelines, and scientific tooling. Strong software-engineering fundamentals: clean architecture, testing, observability, and maintainability. Fluency working with large datasets, simulation outputs, and engineering-grade numerical workflows. Ability to design pragmatic data models and APIs that serve multidisciplinary engineering teams. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, automation frameworks, and reproducible environments. Proficiency leveraging AI/ML tools to automate repetitive tasks, accelerate experimentation, and boost engineering throughput. A collaborative mindset-thriving when integrated directly with domain experts and iterating based on real engineering needs. What Will Set You Apart
Background in turbomachinery, aerospace, or complex physics-based or mathematical modeling. Experience with engine or propulsion analyses-CFD, FEA, cycle analysis, optimization loops, or high-fidelity simulation chains. Strong intuition for the physics underlying modeling workflows and the ability to translate that into better software. Track record unifying scientific, legacy, and commercial tools into coherent, automated pipelines. Demonstrated ability to ship high-impact software quickly in fast-moving, high-stakes environments. Fearless curiosity-a drive to learn how everything works and to build the tools that make it work better.
Compensation
The Base Salary Range for this position is $140,000 - $177,000 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom's total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long-term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.
