POSITION OVERVIEW Applications Accepted From: ALL PERSONS INTERESTED Division: Public Health Services Section: Bureau of Oral Health Location: Location:7037 Capital Street, Houston TX 77011 Workdays & Hours: Monday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. & Tuesday-Friday (7am-4pm)* Subject to change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Houston Health Department has an exciting opportunity for a licensed Dental Assistant to provide basic assistance to the dentist and perform routine clerical work in a dental clinic.
Assists dentist and/or dental hygienist with patient preparation and chairside treatment
May perform follow-up actions as directed by dentist
Sterilizes and maintains instruments and equipment
Takes, develops and mounts x-rays
Performs routine clerical duties, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, filing, ordering supplies and equipment
Assists in maintaining overall cleanliness of dental clinic
Performs other activities as directed by dentist
Provides preventive dental education and postoperative care to patients
May be required to work at more than one clinic location
WORKING CONDITIONS The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS No Experience is required LICENSE REQUIREMENTS CERTIFICATION: Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Dental Assistant by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners PREFERENCES *Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
Experience working with children and senior citizens
Experience in a public health dental clinic

SALARY INFORMATION GENERAL FUND POSITION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
