Introduction

The University of Lausanne is a leading international teaching and research institution, with 17,000 students and over 5,000 employees. Ideally situated along the lake of Geneva, near Lausanne's city centre, its campus brings together over 120 nationalities. The two PhD positions are based at the Center for Research on Life Course and Inequality (LIVES), which is one of the research units of the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (SSP).


Presentation

The two PhD student positions will be part of the ERC consolidator project: Improving Female Migrants’ Labour Market Positioning - An Intersectional Approach to Occupational Segregation Processes across countries and over time (PROFEM) under the lead of Prof. Stephanie Steinmetz. The aim of the project is to examine occupational segregation processes from a gender-migrational perspective across countries and over time considering micro (individual), meso (organisational) and macro (country) factors.



  • Position 1 (education) will focus on enhancing our understanding of how and which mechanisms shape gender-migrational segregation processes in educational choices and their translation into the labour market.


  • Position 2 (organizations) will focus on the role of organizational diversity policies and management in pertaining gender/migrant stereotypes and differences.

Job information

Expected start date: November 1st, 2024


Contract length: 1 year, renewable for 3 years (4 years in total)


Salary: Based on the salary scale set out by UNIL for Doctoral Students


Activity Rate: 100%


Workplace: Quartier de la Mouline, 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland.


Your responsibilities
  • Conduct theoretically informed empirical research leading to a PhD thesis
  • Contribute to the overall research agenda of the PROFEM project and its related activities,
  • Participated in conferences and other project-related outreach activities to regularly discuss your work and the project results with peers and senior researchers.
  • Participate in LIVES and ISS events and actively take advantage of the opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and interfaculty networking.

Your qualifications

The ideal candidate holds the following credentials:



  • A master in sociology, demography, economics, social policy, or another relevant discipline.
  • A strong interest in research on social inequalities in relation to gender and migration.
  • Strong skills in quantitative methods and ability to independently perform data management and advanced analytical tasks using R or Stata.
  • A collaborative attitude and interest in teamwork.
  • Fluency in English (working language), knowledge of French and/or German is an asset.
