SpED Paraprofessional AHS

A staff member who, under the supervision of assigned teacher, is responsible for assisting with the instructional program as well as performing general clerical duties.

Qualifications:

  • AA degree or equivalent of 2-year college, or pass proficiency exam
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literate
  • Experience working with children
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents and staff

Reports To: The classroom teacher to who assigned and/or building principal.

Job Goals: To assist the teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole and to support the instructional process.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Performs the duties and responsibilities involved with assisting teachers in all phases of educating youth.
  • Tutoring students as directed, assisting teachers with routine duties and ensuring the safety and discipline of students.
  • Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as recommending by the teacher for individual students.
  • Monitors students during recess, after school, and other times as needed.
  • Works with students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of students, their needs, interests and abilities.
  • Maintains classroom facilities and materials. Supervises clean up.
  • Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as directed by the teacher.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Assists with large group activities.
  • Maintains bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read and participates in other forms of communication with students. Assist students in the media center.
  • Records student attendance and collects and records collection of money.
  • Assists with lunch, snacks, cleanup, and toilet routines. When appropriate, participates in staffings or recommendations for program changes for students.
  • Serves as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers.
  • Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Administers minor first aid.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the teacher.

Terms of Employment:

  • Number of days assigned annually.
  • Salary and benefits as per Board policy.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and procedures.
