Lead Data Engineer – Enterprise Data & Analytics Team
Overview The American Red Cross is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to modernize and transform our data and reporting capabilities, implementing a new modernized data architecture and technical stack.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with analytics and business teams to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision making across the organization.
Build and implement scalable solutions that align with data governance standards and architectural roadmap for data integrations, data storage, reporting, and analytic solutions.
Design, develop and test data integration solutions; write, automate and document unit/integration/functional tests.
Manage automated deployments using Git pipelines, ensuring code changes are version‑controlled and deployed efficiently.
Collaborate with multiple teams to streamline deployment workflows, monitor and troubleshoot pipelines for reliability and performance.
Perform data analysis required to troubleshoot data-related issues by building a data quality framework and assisting in the resolution of data issues.
Serve as tech lead by mentoring less experienced team members through code reviews, pair programming and hands‑on interactions.
Qualifications
4‑year college degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
10 years of relevant work experience in data engineering, business intelligence, or related field.
Current hands‑on experience with:
Database technologies and data warehouse schema design patterns (snowflake and star in particular).
Cloud‑based databases, specifically AWS technologies (Redshift (preferred), RDS, S3, EC2, EKS, Zero‑ETL).
Advanced SQL query writing and optimization for large‑scale, complex datasets.
Python programming.
AI‑assisted tools for code development, testing, and documentation (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Duo).
Creating ETL and/or ELT jobs.
DevOps methodologies and tools (Git, Artifactory, etc.).
Agile software development methodologies.
Preferred technical experience includes:
DBT.
Developing integrations across multiple systems and APIs.
Skills/abilities required include:
Experience leading data engineering teams in an onshore/offshore model, mentoring junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and establishing team best practices.
Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Process oriented with strong documentation skills.
A sense of passion, energy, and eagerness to contribute to and support the mission of the Red Cross.
Combination of education and general experience satisfies requirements if the total years meet the minimum criteria (management experience cannot be substituted).
Must be authorized to work in the United States. The American Red Cross does not sponsor employment visas.
Work Location Remote with in‑person meetings as necessary. Preference for East Coast schedule for coordination with offshore resources and the ability to attend in‑office meetings. Requires rotational weekend support once every 8 weeks.
Compensation Annual salary range: $140,000 – $155,000. No annual bonus for this role.
