What We Look For In an ACT Writing Tutor
Advanced Test Mastery: Deep knowledge of ACT Writing test format, essay scoring rubric including ideas and analysis, development and support, organization, and language use dimensions. Ability to explain how to evaluate multiple perspectives, develop a clear thesis, construct persuasive arguments with evidence, and demonstrate sophisticated language while preparing students for competitive ACT Writing scores.
Strategic Test‑Taking & Problem‑Solving: Skilled at teaching rapid outline construction, perspective analysis techniques, and time management within the forty‑minute writing window. Guides students through evaluating three given perspectives, developing a nuanced personal position, incorporating counterarguments, and writing cohesive conclusions under pressure. Emphasizes practicing timed essays and using specific examples to strengthen analytical argumentation.
Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with ACT Writing scoring criteria and common challenges such as addressing all three perspectives, developing ideas beyond surface‑level analysis, and maintaining organizational coherence. Adapts instruction using scored sample essays, rubric‑based feedback, and targeted practice prompts. Requires minimum ACT score of 31 to support students seeking competitive writing subscores.
Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
